In fact, the problem is simpler than described. You have the problem with files only, the copied-pasted image does not trigger it.

[1455] Out of Memory while trying to add artwork [#8644]

On a set of 26 FLAC files (spread on 2 discs in a single album), I get a severe bug.
++ settings :
- in Tools/Options/Tags & Playlists/Image Location: 'save image to file folder'
- in Tools/Options/Tags & Playlists/First image per Album: 'folder.jpg'
- in Tools/Options/Tags a Playlists/Format for multiple images: '$if(<Album>,<Album>,<Filename>).thm'
++ Context :
- 20 jpg files (approximatively 4MB per file)
- having selected one flac files, I rightclick 'Edit artwork properties' in the artwork area
- I do edit as follows
- add, in order to have 20 pictures linked to files
- rightclick 'paste' in order to have one picture as a single tag (no link to a file) (a 300X300 res front cover picture previously
copied in clipboard)
- move up this tag only artwork in first position
- save
++ bug description
- MM4 starts computing then finishes with a 'Out of Memory' popup window.
- using Windows Task manager shows that MM4 is using more than 1.5 GB in memory !

Kind regards.
