OK, note that the removing content process can take up several minutes if you are removing thousands of tracks from an USB device. It depends on USB speed and device.

Nevertheless we have replicated an AV, will be fixed as

Ok, that makes sense, once I had worked out what a collection is. I have now created a couple of collections using my regular playlist groups and it appears to work correctly. I wonder if it is possible to have a link from the collections list in the Device Configuration to the Manage Collections dialog?

I did not get an option to send the error report when I got the AV (I am not running the debug version, if this matters). I will try to reproduce it. It looks like the synch process has hung around 1.3 of the way through, although that might be a USB issue rather than MM. I have closed MM and terminated the background process and had to ignore the Do Not Disconnect warning on the device. Once I disconnected it, I got a MM error message with a list of tracks, for example:

'Problem while copying file C:\Users|xxxxxxx\AppData\Local\Temp\FA6B_13 VII Gloria Patri.mp3 to \Music\Sylvia McNair - Exsultate Jubilate and other Works by Handle and Mozart\13 VII Gloria Patri.mp3'

Since the synch has failed, I will reformat the device and try a synch from scratch using a collection.

If you checked just one large auto-playlist then the "Sync random subset" functionality won't work, it works only for collections (it is a collection sub-option). This is the change between MM4 and MM3. In MM3 it worked for all tracks.
The reasons are discussed here: http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view. ... 996#c24594 as item 7

BTW. once you got the Access Violation, did you sent error report? MM should ask you to send error report in such a cases.

e.g. in my test case if I check whole 'Music' collection and check '[x] Sync random subset of selected files up to device capacity' for the music collection then no warning appears and tracks are copied. Maybe you checked the '[x] Sync random subset of selected files up to device capacity' chackbox for another (empty) collection?
I thought that and I checked to make sure "Sync random subset of selected files up to device capacity" was checked. I am re-doing the synch now, having created a 14Gb autoplaylist for the device, but I cannot remember whether the "There isn't enough space" message appeared this time. As I suspected, the original synchronisation did not include artists later in the alphabet - it only got to J when it ran out of space.

I will check some more once this synch is completed. It takes a long time!

Firstly I am enjoying the use of MM4 a great deal and it is fine in day to day use. It encouraged me to purchase a Lifetime license.

I am synchronizing a Sony Walkman with .1456. The size of the synch is greater than the size of the device, and the Synch Random Subset up to device capacity is checked. With MM3 this would result in a list of tracks to be deleted to make room for the new tracks. With MM4 I get a message saying that there is insufficient room on the device "There isn't enough space on the device to synchronise selected files. Would you like to continue?" (Yes/No). I think this could do with some rewording to explain what the consequences of the options are (for example, if you select Yes, in the next step you will be shown a list of tracks that will be deleted from the device) and my first response was to cancel and think again.

Once this was complete, the list of the tracks to be deleted appeared (which seemed to be all tracks on the device). Once I OK-ed that, the deletion process started, but appeared to get stuck. Windows believed that the device was empty (14.2Gb out of 14.3Gb free) but exploring the device in MM4 showed all the tracks still on the device. It remained like this until I want back into the Portable/Audio Device options to check on what the button labels are for this message about 15 minutes later. I could not access the options for the Walkman (nothing happened when I clicked on Configure) but I was able to look at another device. However, clicking Cancel or OK to clear the device options dialog did not work, and when I clicked the close button I got an AV at address 006DF2A8 in MediaMonkey.exe at address 000000. When I cleared this the Options box disappeared and synchronization of tracks to the Walkman commenced. I am not sure whether it had started in the background or whether the AV was related to the failure to commence synchronizing new tracks.

There seems to be more changed behaviour between MM3 and MM4. In MM3, the synchronisation process would report the number of files that it could fit onto the device. In MM4 it seems to list all the tracks in the selected playlists - it is reporting that it is going to get 6133 files (51.4Gb) onto the device, although it will only be able to fit on around 1,700. Since it appears to synch in order of artist, it looks like MM is going to miss the artists later in the alphabet because it has overestimated the number of tracks that will fit on the device. Now the device is full I have a MM error message saying that "Insufficient Space Available".

A final suggestion - it would be good to be able to prioritise playlists so that the device would be filled in the order of the playlists and that the random selection of tracks only commences when MM reaches a playlist that cannot be fitted on whole.
