The problem is this: your files are not tagged with the album artist field, but if you go to right-click > properties it looks like it is tagged with album artist, because MM automatically fills it in. The only way to be sure is to enable the "album artist" in the grid view to see if the file is actually tagged.

Hi all. I'm just confirming that this is still happening in 4.03. If I have a new album in Windows Explorer, right click, play in MM and then try to organize files it defaults to "UNknown" album artist even though MM clearly sees the album artist. They weren't scanned in the normal sense. I typically use right-click Windows Explorer menu to "Play in MM". I do this when I'm about to merge new files into my library. I put them in the play editor and then use the Organize Files feature to merge them with my main library folder. It typically works quite well. Perhaps the last batch of MP3s I created/acquired weren't tagged with the AA. I'll repost if I continue to have issues. Thanks for the help!

It looks like MM displays the Artist in the Album Artist field if AA is null. I guess the several albums I tried had no AA tags although I edited them through Windows Explorer and other not-to-be-mentioned media players. Thanks for the help.

I'm experiencing the same (or similar) issue with 4.0.1.1461. My tracks all have album artist, but the "Organize Files" doesn't recognize them until after I re-tag that field through MM. Until I re-tag, it shows "Unknown" as the Album Artist folder title although it does see it in the track properties correctly.

Any solution ever provided? It broke after I upgraded to 4 from 3 (Gold in both cases).

Cheers from Cape Town.

What happen to that bug? It was working fine few builds ago. To reproduce the problem:

go to the web page: http://chomikuj.pl/aprzybylo
download 2 files one is mp3 one is wma
put them in one folder
scan the folder
you will see that wma file in MM explorer has Album Artist set to Dire Straits
mp3 file has Album Artist void
edit mp3 file properties you will see Dire straits in Album Artist filed
Note both files have exactly the same tags (one is just copy of another) still behavior is different
Also if you check MM4 few builds ago it was working fine for mp3 as well (like it still works for wma files)

I have the same issue. It started in build 1373 I think. I noticed that this is linked to mp3 files that I never had imported to MM before. I just did frensh install and my whole collection that has already been in MM scanned fine. Only new files I just got have this problem. Also the problem is not present in wma files.

There does seem to be an issue where the Filelisting doesn't show Album Artist and the Properties does. Entered as: http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=7830

Which is correct as the information isn't in the tags it shouldn't be there.

You can use $If(<Album Artist>,<Album Artist>,<Artist>) which uses Album Artist if present and otherwise Artist.

I disagree.

It means any single (ie: not pertaining to an album) fails to show in list of album artists in the filter fields of MM (at the top)

That sounds like a good thing though. When the field is empty it should be treated as empty in Auto-Organize Files and not guess a value from another field.
