No, there is a wishlist topic on this, but the Media Tree provides you with a lists of Artists.

How would you do that if it was collapsed, you wouldn't see any would you?

What you probably would want is to be able to tag a node so it would not collapse. You would tag them in the expanded view then the flagged ones would stay visible after the view was collapsed. That sounds like a wishlist item to me.
