The MediaMonkey of photo managers? I think not

by Darryl_Gittins » Thu Jul 19, 2007 11:37 am

The MediaMonkey of photo managers? I think not. Picajet has a pretty interface, but otherwise, it is a disaster. The really stupid thing about picajet is that it does not use the standard Metadata that is stored in the photos. Therefore, you cannot migrate existing date to or from PicaJet. This is extraordinarily stupid.

MM on the other hand, relies on the standard metadata. Therefore, that data is not lost if you migrate to or from MM. This is extraordinarily smart.

I wish I could manage my photos with MM. It does such an incredible job. (Did I mention I think MM is one of the best programs ever written - bar none?_

I use Microsoft Digital Image Suite (DIS) and I love the "labels" feature where you can add keywords to images. this information is stored in the standard "Keywords" metadata field in the photo that any software can use (except for really stupid programs like Picajet that do not use this information!) All my pictures have been labeled accordingly. DIS also has a nice feature that quickly renames photos using dates and such, and I have seen other utilities that can also do this.

However, no other program that I've seen let you rename the photos using the "Keyword" information. That is, if the picture has keywords such as "Bob;Mary;Mexico", there should be a way to rename the photo(s) using "Bob Mary Mexico.JPG". Make sense? This seems like the single most useful option for renaming photos, and yet none of the photo or file renaming programs seem to be able to do this. I've looked at about 100.

I really wish there was such a thing as a MediaMonkey of photo managers!

MM rocks!!

I have Picassa installed in my system for the past 4 months, although i still rarely use it (like every other photo monager). I can't comment on its functionality but is indeed the friendlier photo manager i have used. Now, about the connection issue. Picassa, as with every other Google product out there, ask for your permission to connect to the internet the fist time it installs. As a matter of fact, all Google products diplay a very clear message warning you about that, while almost every other program hides this notice somewhere deep in the EULA. Anyway, i have allowed picassa to send info to Google, but in never tried to do so, unless it was opened.
So, Agent smart, either you have asked from Picassa to do an action that requires internet connection (e.g. blog your photos) and thus it tried to connect to the internet, causing windows to pop-up the connection dialog, or some other programm was trying to access it.

the picasa of music managers

My vote is for picasa... simple, easy to use, fast and free... I'm inclined to think you need a different type of application for audio and that MediaMonkey is the picasa of music managers...

(funny thing is that i don't even get paid for doing this mm promotion stuff)

I personally use Adobe Photoshop Elements v4...granted: its not free, but has great editing and organizing capabilities: i only find it a bit lacking sharing files online...for the rest I LOVE IT!!

You might wanna try adobe photoshop album as well...really good in organizing not so good in "advanced" editing...

Mine has never done anything like that. Maybe you had a hacked version or something. I don't know.

by agentsmart » Sun Jan 29, 2006 6:25 am

it said " do you want to add your photos to the online album "

that is what the free one i got said so i know it was trying to do something i did not want.

now granted someone could have posted a hacked version on the link before i had got it. and then google could have caught it and not say they had a hacked link on their site.

but when the dial up connection pops up and wants me to put my password in for conneting to the net? well that tells me something is trying to get out and when the balloon from zone alarm says it is " program. ???? that is trying to act as a server. well that is proof enough for me so i took the blooming program out. :o

I use Picasa since ver.1 I even bought it years ago when it was for sale and I must say that I don’t believe the conspiracy theory about Google sharing all the photos Picasa users are having in their libraries. I think that’s a bull … The app is connecting due to checking updates. I tried searching for my filenames on Google images search and it come out nothing.

I am having no problems whit it and wouldn’t change it for nothing! Especially cool thing are build-in special effects that don’t alter my original files so I can alter my pictures as I want to accession I want and can always return to my original state.

So Picasa scores a big fat 9/10 from me. :P

and it wanted to go to googles server.?
But it could have wanted to connect to the server to check for updates, like most programs do. And anyway, do you have proof that any of your photo's are online? Not to mention that the pictures found on google's image search are clearly from websites as they have proper urls.

just thought I'd point that out

Agent Smart, I am not so sure I understand what you want to say. I have a firewall and nothing connects to the internet without my permission, so I know for sure that Picassa doesn't share my photos with anybody. Can you explain in more detail what you mean? Did you see your photos online? Do you have a software that alerted you that picassa was using your internet line? IF this is true I want to know, so please give me some more information.

by agentsmart » Sun Jan 29, 2006 12:20 am

thank you for your photos everyone that uses googles free photo editor.

i always like to get new photos.

googles image search online uses that program how did you think it found all them images.?

i downloaded that program and found what it was trying to do when i installed it. as i always install new software when disconnected from the web. and it wanted to go to googles server.?

the program was uninstalled just as fast as it was put in the computer and i ran a system clean out to make sure i got rid of any nasty little surprises it left behind.

so google scores a big fat 0 from me. :x

Seems to me all that the program offers in the paid version comes for free in Google's Picassa2, plus the ability to post to blogs and more. i have been using Picassa for over a year now and I have found it easy and fun to use with manymore features than I could ever need.

Ok, I admit defeat,

I didnt really check the site (damn, should have done that first) before posting, I just saw that it cost 39.95 or something.

Just visited this site and found: Free vs FX: http://www.picajet.com/en/index.php?page=freevsfx
