And generally, you cannot compare tag names for different file formats (like MP3, FLAC and M4A), these formats have completelly different formats of storing tags and different sets of standard tags...

ID3 comment tags are used by MM (and several other tagging programs) for custom fields, which do not have any standard tag, a long time for compatibility reason. They can be read by any application, that understands standard ID3 comment field. Text like "SONGS-DB_OCCASION" is there to differentiate standard comment and comment with custom field. MusicBee uses different tag - TXXX - for custom fields like OCCASION. It uses TXXX tag also for MOOD, even though there is standard tag for this, TMOO. I think, MusicBee is probably the only SW, that uses these tags... we will consider to add support for them too.

I don't know too much about tags, but MM used ID3v2.3 not v2.4 so I don't know what the standard says for Occasion.

Thank you for that link. It got me reading more and doing a couple tests. Here's what I found. That page is incorrect. MM doesn't just write "COMM:Songs-DB_Occasion" to .mp3 files. Nor does it write "OCCA" to .M4A files. MM will write the following tags to these files...

.MP3 = "COMMENT SONGS-DB_OCCASION" and "COMMENT MUSICMATCH_SITUATION"
.M4A = "OCCASION"
.FLAC = "OCCASION"

So I know MM will write atleast three different tags for the occasion field depending on the files it is writing to. Two for MP3 files. No standard seems to exists in any format for tagging occasions. But "occasion" does seem to be the most widely used as well as the most direct and simple. I'm sure there was some reasoning behind MM using the dual obscure "comment..." tags in MP3 files. But I do find it frustrating that it uses something so different and obscure for MP3 files when no standard exists. And that especially since no standard exists that MM won't let me choose how to write it to the tags. Unless someone has more feedback to give I'll be making another feature request.

check out the skins you can use on mm there are lots of them I've made 23 of them, different sizes and themes all were for mm3 but will work on mm4
there might be one easier for them to use, check out the images on the wiki for my skins, and the link in my signature to my post for my skins where there is a link to the download site I use for them.
and there are others making new skins yet so easy of use in mediamonkey is not a problem if you want basic play and look at cover art.
but as you can see mm has tons of options that work wonders for music, and mm 4 even handles videos.

just you must remember never edit any file formats you assign to mm, in the explorer or other program or mm will lose track of the files location. 8)

Not completely set on it yet. But it does have a lighter weight, more elegant and feature rich interface for playing and browsing. Was looking for something with basic playing and artwork display that my wife and kids can navigate more easily and enjoyably. Then I saw this tagging issue. Since I struggle with MM and v2.4 tags, more specifically how it handles multiple artists, I was curious if this is a tagging issue on MM side again or something else.

I use mediamonkey for the main management of my library on my PC. for the family PC I am playing with musicbee as the player. I've noticed that musicbee does not read the "occasion" tag the MM writes. I have both configured to use id3v2.4 tags. When I inspect in mp3tag mm is writing the occasion tags to the following fields...
COMMENT MUSICMATCH_SITUATION
COMMENT SONGS-DB_OCCASION

But musicbee reads/writes only...
OCCASION

is one or the other the correct method? What is the correct tag?
My next questions on how to get MM and MB to work together will depend on which one uses the correct standard.
