When you install MediaMonkey select Portable Install in the installer and choose your external drive as install location.

by 'portable install', do you just mean re-downloading the Gold version onto the external drive?

Sorry, but I'm still lost---the database file and all the others I mentioned are already on the external drive. I can plug the ext. drive into a diff't laptop and see the files I mentioned---this is where I'm stuck. How do I go about starting MM again using the External drive to do so?

Help! My laptop crapped out on me, but luckily I had created a backup file of MM on an external drive prior to this. I'd like to (as mentioned above) just run it from the external drive from now on but I have some questions. I see the db file in the folder labeled media monkey backup which also has other subfolders in it (favicons, Metadata cache, plugins, scripts, skins) and files: cdplayer, mediamonkey ini, mediamonkey.m3u8, milkdrop_config, and the db file. I also have my music files on the external drive already. I don't understand how I start MM to even see if it works? I'm a gold member so will that be already saved as such? I saw mention of downloading a portable version - - -do I need to do that too?

Hi,
There is an easier way to do that, which end in 99.9% of files transferred and allocated correctly.
1. Refresh MMW Library by re-scan and not updating TAGs (it can be set in options) so that Files have most recent FileSize and timestamp.
2. Backup MM.DB
3. Copy all Files to External Device with Copy application that will preserve file timestamp (some apps use caching that will result in few hours faster copy)
4. Install MMW as Portable (Do not start)
5. Copy MM.DB
6. Start MMW on any other PC using copy of portable MMW folder locally (External HDD slow downs on ANY application that needs many access query thus local SSD is recommended) and Skip Initial Wizard just start MMW
7. Select All track from Library that are on your external HDD
8. Use File -> Locate moved missing tracks and point to your external HDD
9. Depending on number of tracks take a nap

NOTE: this is based on many users it helped to regain your old MM.DB statistics back and on user I personally helped to move/set 190k+ of tracks while retaining all statistics that was collected over 10 years of usage (result ended that MMW could not locate/update 40 tracks which are updated manually where before he could not access/play 190k+)

P.S. Main Benefit of this method is that untill you do not 100% confirm all went correctly you have your original files and setup safe.

I can report that the above procedure to move files to an external drive and to switch to a portable installation of MM works fine. The only problem I had was that while moving files using the auto-organize feature I received many errors of the nature "An error occurred while moving file... Do you want to try again?" In most cases answering yes resulted in a successful move of the file. But it basically meant that I had to sit behind my computer while moving about 27000 files. Rather a pain. I also wonder what causes the errors if simply trying again resolves the issue.
Anyway, I am happily set up now with all my music on an external drive and a portable installation of MM. Thanks again for the help.

Some features (like Taskbar player) won't work as they require OS integration, something a Portable Install shouldn't do. I've been running it like this for a long time.

One more question: are there any drawbacks to a portable installation as compared to a main drive installation?

I don't know if this works, I did it like this, but I don't move my MediaMonkey around nor am I using a drive letter for my files (this no portability issues there).

1) Move your media files with MediaMonkey.
2) Create a copy of the database: http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... -ini-files
3) Uninstall MediaMonkey (not really needed, but best if you won't use it: http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... ediamonkey)
4) Install MediaMonkey as Portable Install on external drive.
5) Copy the database to the Portable folder of the MediaMonkey install folder on the drive.
