But without explicit support for tagging (in the tag cloud sense, not the id3 sense) its pretty hard to do. Ideally a good tagging implementation would allow you to click on the MM tasktray icon and open a text box.. then type in a number of words.. these words would autocomplete based on previously entered words, it would then add these words to the comments field but be able to handle them as seperate keywords.

(ie, if i type in: rock punk funky party happy "road trip") it would add all these to the comments tag, but also know that this isn't just one long string, but 6 tags.
And next time i start typing "roa" it would autocomplete the rest for me.

Plus there would be a "keywords" option that let you select based on keywords.. but in general you'd just use the search or autoplaylists.

An actual real "tag cloud" view for all the sorting options (genre, mood, keywords, etc.." would be nice too.. as the different sized fonts are a nice way to navigate.

While lowlander is right that its almost possible already, i;ve been tryign to get it to do exactly what i want and haven't suceeded yet. Needs a script... ;)

If you want a tag cloud, then just use the song's comment field. Every tag you enter there can be found using the search function.
And as Lowlander says, a lot of tagging possibilities are already there, that you can also use.

Tag clouds already exists. Click on the rock genre and you'll see all tracks in the rock cloud. You also have the following cloud categories available:

album
year
rating
tempo
mood
occasion
quality
custom1-3
and others

thru find more from and auto-playlists you can access this easily and the promised multi value fields would make this complete.

This reminds me of the tagging feature request. Having something like del.icio.us but with mp3s would be great, I like the interface with tag autocompletion and the tags clouds.

You already can use user defined values for the mood field. And don't forget that you also have the occasion and quality field.

And also that whatever is implemented needs to be compatible with the standards so that other software/players can read it if they implement that field following the standard.

Your approach is conceptually different but results in the same as in what MediaMonkey offers. MediaMonkey misses multiple values per field (improvements have been promised) and some way to track which user listened to what (could possibly be done thru scripting). The listened experience could be done in a custom field.

@Lowlander: Yes, I know. But this feature would be much more powerful since you can youse it for a lot of different purposes. And you candefinde the keywords by yourself. The moods are static, I think. (not sure though)

And the already existing fields like tempo and mood. The only limitation is that no multiple values for a field are supported yet. This might be added in a future release.

You can use any one of your three Custom fields too.

I use my Custom 3 and call it Description

Maybe you're right, I could use autoplaylists with "if comment contains "Katty then --> playlist". Although this solution is not user-friendly at all. I just thought that this would a useful feature for everyone and gives a adantage over the other mediaplayers. Because if you want users you must have some features which the others don't. Sure MM has already a lot of advantages over other programs. But something like this would be nice. Ir would be a typical Apple-idea (which it also is...).

I just had an idea how MediaMonkey could be improved even more.
What about keyword support? I think it would be great if there would be a field "keywords" where you could save some words which belong to the song. This feature exists already in fotomanagers.
I think it would be cool if then there would be a keyword-node, where the songs are shown. The songs should be listed under multiple keywords when they have more than one keyword.
The best thing would be, if we then could group some keyword together under one node.

As you see, you could do a lot with this feature. I think it would be the best, if we only save the sub-nodes like "Katty", "Summer 2004 in Italy" into the keywords field. And this subnodes can be moved with dragndrop into nodes like "Also listened by", which are not saved in the files.
