I don't remember the Metro skins having other than dark backgrounds, but I settled on one quite a while back and haven't looked since.
If you haven't already, you might try the 'Metro M (Classic) Kn' skin, that's the one I ended up with. It's about like Metro M, but slightly different accent colors which seem to work much better on the old eyes. Still has dark background, but somehow the other colors make it more readable and pleasing to the eye, for me anyway.
It might be possible to change background color by editing the '.less' files in the 'skin' sub-folder of your Metro skin's folder. Looks like they mmight define the skin colors and other stuff. I used to be able to hack html & css files a bit, but have no idea what to do with the .less files, all new stuff to me.
