Thanks for getting back to me!!!
I think I threw you off by saying "select" when I should have said "check".
You can "select" a song by clicking on the song row. It gets highlighted for some action that is usually identified in a right-click pull-down menu.
In iTunes, the first column on a song row is a checkbox.
When you load songs to the library, every song is checked off by default. That means that they are available for playback. If you are playing any list and that song comes up, it will play. Any list retrieved or otherwise generated via some kind of "search". List of songs on an album. List of songs by an Artist. List of songs on a playlist. Etc. If a checked song comes up, it will be played.
Alternatively, if a song is un-checked, it is unavailable for playback. If you are playing a list and that song comes up, it will be skipped. It can only be played if you double-click that specific song row or click that row and then click the play arrow. In those cases, you are over-riding the un-checked status of the song by specifically telling the program to play it.
As a collector, I want to keep the integrity of songs on every album intact. As a listener, I want to skip certain songs, indefinitely, with the option to make them available in the future. For example, I may get tired of a song and un-check it so it will be skipped; then I may re-check it when I'm ready to start hearing it again. Another use of this function is when I pull up a list of songs and I notice a few songs I don't want to hear right now. I un-check them. Then, when I'm done listening, I re-check them for the future.
So, is there a way to perform this function of identifying what songs in the library are/aren't available for playback?
