I've tried my luck with MediaPortal again. I like the speed, but what a monster to configure. My main problem with all these apps is that they focus on TV whereas I need a decent offline TV browser.

I also run in to the MeediOS project which continues on Meedio, but will be open source. As of writing this there is no application yet.

Another good site for MCE software can be found here.

I actually swicthed from MediaPortal to Meedio as it pretty much didn't work and caused all kinds of system failures. For now Meedio does as I just use it for playback, but I'm always on the look for something new.

Yes, I hated that buyout too.

Check out the open source MediaPortal. :)

I haven't totally migrated to it yet, but it looks like the place to be for a 'Media Center' replacement.

(Note: Right now I run Windows Media Center for Videos with MM for music :) ... and iTunes 7 if I want to impress the ladies with the album view :) )

What would you do....

IF you spent a lot of time creating something and someone else comes with a bag of post-internet-buble-bag-o-money?

You entire retirement would be taken care of..... this isnt a sell out in my opinion, but hey, lets fry the bast#rds before they do hehe.

I was just being paranoid wanted to discuss a bit whats going to happen in the mp3 world in the next couple of months...

I'm still looking to what can replace Meedio. I'm highly dissapointed by the purchase of Meedio and the changes Yahoo! has made so far.

Well, if MM gets bought out, people might be able to move to songbird (which is probably also MM's biggest potential threat, being free, and cross-platform). At the moment, songbird is nowhere near as good as MM, but could be, in a year or two.

Look at Yahoo! and Meedio. When Y! bought Meedio (formerly MyHTPC), the community left. Same will happen to MM if it happens. We will go to the next independent program and make it great. But lets just make sure everyone upgrades to Gold to support the devs and not give them an excuse to sell out.

Geez Thanks! Something else I have to worry about now.
As if I didn't have anough concerns with global warming, the economy, politics and companies messing with MY music, now I have to worry about MM being taken away from me. :-?

So as long as the team don't sell out, we'll be ok!

It's probably easier to create a new application to support your variant of DRM and your own music store, than buying MediaMonkey.

Anyway I guess that Ventis Media is privatly owned and not publicly traded or owned by venture capitalists so it couldn't be done in a sneaky way.

I think that the big companies will only buy MediaMonkey if it's more visually appealing.

If it gets bought and DRM'ed (isn't independant anymore), I'm sure that the current user base will move very quickly to an other independant player.
Didn't we all choose for MediaMonkey (also) because it's independant, not DRM'ed, doesn't do anything behind our backs, ...?

But there's already iTunes, JRiverMC, ... so I don't think they would look to MM very soon.

You read all over the net, that the music industry is about to start a new war over "digital music". They are ten years late, but they have a huge amount of accumulated money to spend........so while reading articles on the Zume, iPod, iTunes, WMP etc. a thought kept sneaking into my head.

What if a major company, purchases MM to get a "foothold" in the industry, what would happen?

Would they implement (D)aaaaaaa(R)g(M)?

Would they use it to block the function to rip copy controlled cd's (Our OWN cd's at that...)?

The reasons I can see for this to happen is that MM is starting to accumulate a wide(r) user base.

They have a functional software with no connections to other companies.

It's cheaper to buy MM then to develop your own advanced player.....
