By default, MM will read what is on the ipod and ask you if you want to keep the files that are already on there and arent in the sync list.

-If you say yes, then MM will keep all of the files and sync the rest of the files that arent on the ipod but are in your "ready for mediamonkey" folder.

-If you say no, then MM will delete those files form the ipod, then sync with your "ready for mediamonkey" folder

But you can also go into the sync settings and uncheck the option to delete files not ont he sync list.

(Options, Portable Audio devices, configure ipod, sychronization options tab)

thanks, steegy! at least i know now what i can do with MM concerning converting on the fly. i look forward to 3.0! have there been rumors of a release date?

ok, last question (I SWEAR!... kinda): i mentioned my fear of accidentally losing the music on my iPod due to syncing something. last night i took the plunge and plugged my iPod in. it was great! i was able to drag and drop music directly into my iPod and also transcode on the fly! now, what i like to do is tag an album using Tag&Rename, then move it into a folder labeled "ready for MediaMonkey". i chose this folder to be scanned on startup and added to the MM library. then, i drag and drop the new additios to my iPod. and now for my question - if i choose the "ready for MediaMonkey" folder to sync with my iPod, does is (A) copy any new music to my iPod that's in that "ready for MediaMonkey" folder, but not on my iPod, OR does it (B) make my iPod and the "ready for MediaMonkey" folder identical by deleting everything off the iPod that's not in that folder?

That's not yet possible. Probably MM3.0 (soon to come) will allow this.

wow, thanks everybody (especially lowfi). this is all great info. it sounds like i'm almost there. so, the only thing i have to figure out is if i can convert to 128AAC on the fly directly into my iPod. i'd be all set if i could do that. i'll keep looking for a plug in.

and while we're on plugins... i thought i installed the correct plugin to convert an mp3 to an AAC file, but AAC is not an option for conversion. i may have only installed a plugin to allow AAC files to be played. can anyone point me in the right direction for a plugin that allows you to convert an mp3 file to an AAC file (ESPECIALLY if it will allow you to do it on the fly!)

I take back what I said above. I guess you can install a plug in that would allow you to play AAC files or convert AAC to another format. It doesn't come with the regular MM package.

I don't think MM supports AAC. You would have to convert to 128 MP3 (for Ipod).

You don't have to worry about that. Just download MM and set it up to not autosynchronize before you plug in your Ipod for the first time.

my biggest fear is that i'll plug in my iPod with MM open and it will automatically sync with some default folder and i'll lose all the music on my iPod. (i haven't used anything but iTunes up to this point... and i'm trying to get all my ducks in a row before i try MM)

Yes you can drag and drop. I haven't tried converting songs to a lower bit rate but you can do that too.

Tools/options/portable audio devices/ipod/

Then you can choose which folders to use when synchronizing, and choose to NOT automatically synchronize when your device is connected.

Then go to the auto-conversion tab and you can specify which files to convert (all with bitrate >300 for example) and what you want to convert it to when you synch (mp3 128 cbr for example).

That what you want it is called Manual Sync. and Auto-Conversation (GOLD feature) I have not iPod for testing but D&D should work.

Anyone with iPod?
