Yes: the SUBST device ^MM TDJ uses d_USBMass1.dll , the portable player ZEN C uses d_WMDM.dll .

No.

The device I am configging is the SUBST drive which was apparently recognised long before - upon launch. Certainly the portable device was more recently recognised, but it seems to me the issue is the irregular ordering, and certainly that does not disappear any time soon after recognition.
Perhaps we should concentrate on finding the cause of the irregular ordering. In case it is relevent, I also have a second instance of MM running as a different user. But that is insufficient to cause it every time. If from the source you can suggest a vulnerability, I'll try it.
