OIC! Thanks.

I just meant that 'I get it' referring to the fact that the file is just a standard wma file that's included with windows.

Rusty, does that mean you reproduced this issue?

ok. I see what you mean. I'm not sure why WMP would play a track with DRM that MM wouldn't. Moving to the bugs forum since it's not beta specific and we won't be tackling this in 3.1.0.

Current workaround is as described in the linked KB article.

Already done in the OP: WINDOWS\system32\oobe\images\title.wma

> and let me see if I can repro (though I suspect that the issue is likely environment-specific).

I guess only specific to DRM\ folder - I have emailed that to support@mediamonkey.com ("[CJJ BAD]\DRM\

EDIT: email rejected - resent as web ticket LJZ-809382

PS For Ticket System Dev: "One of the required field(s) is empty" erases "Upload File(s)"!

strange...

I'm not sure what other apps burn audio CDs and support WMA DRM, but perhaps an alternate test would be to send me a link to one of the tracks and let me see if I can repro (though I suspect that the issue is likely environment-specific).

OK - just the metion's location confused me! :)

(This OP issue, I presume).

Not reproduced here! As the OP says "it plays in Windows Media Player".

If there's doubt this is MM-specific, I am happy to try an other app you suggest.

Thanks -- I've updated the articles further clarify this.

Re. bug 5571, I only mentioned it to indicate that the issue was still on our todo list. I haven't entered a new bug for the DRM issue because afaik it's an MS issue that will occur with any app that plays DRMed WMA tracks (i.e. any app that enforces WMA DRM via MS libraries).

Note: that does not apply to this issue. That says "If failures occur only with some WMA files..." whereas this issue occurs with all of the variety of WMA files I have tried.

> and http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... icleid=117

Likewise. That says
If WMA Playback failures occur only with some WMA files and/or you receive an error:
'...Some of the tracks are protected by Digital Rights Management...'
and neither applies here.

> Bug 5571 remains open.

OK... but I see nothing to suggest that issue (Writing WMA tags fails on vanilla Win XP SP2 http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=5571) is causally linked to this.

Chris,

Thanks. I've updated http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... ticleid=92 and http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... icleid=117 to make this more clear.

Bug 5571 remains open.

> Can this be related to issues described in this KB article?

Well, who knows? That KB issue description does not cover my issue, but perhaps that's only because the effect of the same common cause (if my transfer of previously good but foreign settings amounts to 'corruption') on MM has changed (the KB omits to say which MM version it applies to) from crash to play failure.

However, if any user following my path did stumble upon that KB, and followed workaround #2, I think he'd be happy, since that contains the operation found to be sufficient by me.

I think the Devs might want to look into this, not so much to fix the non-play - perhaps that's inevitable - but to fix the unpleasant effect on the state of the app. Esp. since this might shed light on other WMA problems shown by MM and no other apps TMK, for example "1190/1209 WMA tag write failure on Win XP SP2 [bug# 005571]" http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... 69#p204569. I have linked from that topic to this.

@chrisjj
Can this be related to issues described in this KB article?

1244 Transferred DRM folder causes WMA play failure

by chrisjj » Sun May 17, 2009 7:52 pm

I'm not suggesting this is necessarily an MM bug, but it caused a lot of time waste here, so is worth addressing.

On Win XP with SP2 plus the MM-official WMF11 (http://tinyurl.com/p4pj3s):

1 Copy settings from an old machine to this, including Documents and Settings\All Users\DRM\
2 In MM, play WINDOWS\system32\oobe\images\title.wma

Expected: track plays (especially since it plays in Windows Media Player)
Observed: 0.5sec delay, track text in Now Playing goes grey, track does not play, and no further tracks inc. .MP3 will play until exit and relaunch.

And, upon exit, an MM process is left running.

Workaround: delete Documents and Settings\All Users\DRM\, at possible cost! On next launch of MM, a DRM\ is created.

Note: here's a comparsion of the original bad and created good DRM\s filesets

Both files set are available if needed.

Suggested remedy: fix program behaviour, else file a KB article with workaround.
