I'm not sure an icon would work well, as if they're not what's used for the nodes/collections in the tree that would be confusing and if they are what's used in the tree then there's potential for them to lose their distinctiveness due to skinning or whatnot. I don't think Bold would look too good either. Italics might work however. Subtle enough to distinguish but not bold enough (pun intended :P) to stick out like a sore thumb?

An icon or Italics/Bold come to mind as other options. As said, I'm not a fan, but it isn't a make or break issue either.

Well, I can see it both ways, Lowlander. At first I wasn't sure it was an appropriate approach to the problem (though I had no other suggestions), but now that I think about it... this could actually apply well. The check box gives indication as to whether it is visible or not. So gray text does make it appear as though the nodes are disabled... but in a way they are. If you double click on a filter, it opens up their options. If you double click a node, nothing happens. So the gray text could be interpreted as there not being any options for that node. Though I'm open to hearing some suggestions on how to better represent this.

I can't say I'm a use fan of the choice to gray out non-collection items in the Media Tree settings. It looks as if the items are disabled.

3) Yeah, the problem is in Tools > Options > Media Tree where there is no visual way to identify which Media Tree Item is editable (is a Collection) and which isn't.

In other words, it isn't a skinning issue, but a MediaMonkey issue.

No problem.

By the way, I mentioned the vitreous skin as an example. But I didn't mean to criticizes it in any way.

I really like the vitreous icons. They look way more up to date and smooth than the old MM3 icons.

On the contrary, I think it was me who misunderstood! thx for the clarification!

I thought Mizery_made wanted a distinction between the:

"built in nodes" : Now playing , playlists, upnp servers, my computer

and the

"collections nodes" : Regular Music, music, classical music, podcast, audiobook, music video, video, tv, downloads, organised music, christmas music

In pulse, collections nodes have a custom background while built in nodes have a transparent background.

Sorry if I misunderstood.

Ofc this would not solve that problem if you are using i.e. the vitreous skin.
I don't follow you. Here shows the Pulse skin:

See that the same icon is used for "Music" (MM default collection) as "Downloads", "Organized music", "Christmas music", and "Regular music" - all custom collections that I have made. So how are your icons any different than in Vitreous?

@Eyal: Likewise I'm not sure what you're saying either. The only unremovable nodes are ones it would not make sense to delete (eg UPNP, Playlists, My Computer, Net Radio, etc.) Isn't it sort of intuitive that these can't be deleted?

Oh I see what you mean now.

This gave me an idea. Maybe they could add icons there.
Ofc this would not solve that problem if you are using i.e. the vitreous skin.

So maybe there could be some visual clue. ( Maybe a " * " in front of the collections nodes? I don't know. )
Do you have ideas how it could be implemented?

I am using the Pulse skin (easily my favorite out of the defaults skins). However I think you misunderstand what area is being referred to. The collections and nodes do look different in the actual Tree, however I'm/we're talking about the "Media Tree" options sheet (which was Previously "Collections"). In that area, there is no indication given as to what is a collection or a built in node, unless you highlight the item and see if Delete & Edit are available (thus meaning it's a Collection).

re 3) In the pulse skin I gave a distinct look to the collections nodes icons.
You might wanna try that skin.

1) I connected a portable device (SD card reader) to my machine and it is now the top most item and can't be repositioned. So the issue is that the top most item can't be moved nor that another item can be made the top most item.

1) I don't know why, also it seems by default the Now Playing is way down the list (I initially thought I lost it with the upgrade). I haven't used Entire Library yet, so it doesn't bother me, but I think it's best the order of nodes isn't restricted in any way.

2) The speed doesn't bother me.
