OK. 12000 songs synced without an issue. It seems like Ogg auto-conversion was the issue here, mp3 works fine (although that is a lesser format).

Weird, I think I got it working now. Cleared my phone from music and started re-syncing. However, this time I chose MP3 for auto-conversion instead of ogg. Might ogg be an issue?

So far, I have been able to sync several thousand songs and not a single issue.

I now tried to empty the whole auto-sync list and disabled deletion of unselected music. That way, I can gradually add a larger and larger portion of my media library back to the auto-sync list and see if anything changes. Interestingly, with only a few hundred tracks selected sync runs flawlessly ...

I found that MMA was still running and submitted a debug log even though I'm not at the desktop. Hopefully the log contains the relevant data even though the error occured 12 hours previously. Log ID KKRSN83EAO.
