Media Monkey with a Media Server?

How can I point MM to a media server, a la Fuppes, Nero MediaHome, etc.?

Thanks for writing, but I'm not sure that link has anything to do with the issue, right? I have used that page to get an understanding of how to have multiple users use the same library with different databases, but does that link actually discuss having MediaMonkey access files on a media server? If you look, there are 6 scenarios discussed (briefly), none of which discusses a media server.

To be clear, a media server is not a server that has media (as discussed in the page you suggested). A media server (such as the ones I gave as examples; Fuppes and Nero MediaHome 4) is discussed at a high level here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_server. It is not a server that exposes a share that a workstation then requires MediaMonkey to "mount" it. A media server is typically "discovered" on a LAN, and the connection, indexing and cataloging are seamless.

To give an example, the PS3 (among other consoles) can be told to search the LAN it is on for media servers, and it will find them. This is all done via uPnP and there are no drives or shares involved on either end.

So if anyone has even heard of MediaMonkey connecting to a media sever, I'd love to hear about it!

MediaMonkey can't connect to a media server as you describe. There might be some activity in this area in the Scripts and Components forum, but right now it is not possible.

Many have requested that this will be added and it's on the wishlist.

I also know that Media Servers are the way to go, specially when you have a large collection. I know that Windows shares are just tooo slow, and other ways for distribution are just too complex for the standard Windows user (NFS shares anyone?). The use of typical media servers (TwonkyMedia, FireflyMediaServer) just makes all the tag management complex, as you cannot be sure that a tag in MM is being treated the same in the other servers, plus you need to keep those servers up to date with lengthy updates.

You are welcome to try my UPNP scripts, as they do the trick for me. Maybe you can help me debug any other clients/servers you mentioned. You know, a man can have so many clients, and I only have two: Roku Soundbridge (that is hardware) and XBMC (software).

I got a PS3 a few months ago. I have a notebook in my family room that I just plug a stereo mini jack cord into the headphone jack and run MM piping the sound through my stereo. I recently switched from Yahoo Music to Rhapsody and was surprised to find a Rhapsody Server in the Media Server section of the PS3 menu! Pretty cool! Thing is, if you are using that, then the TV is being used by the PS3 if you want to select playlists, view info on what's playing, etc. I got all excited about it, but all my Playlists, ratings and such are stored in MM and I don't think there is a way to export that to Rhapsody. And then I got thinking, its not that great because in the summer I'll play music on my deck with Zone 2 on the receiver and sports on the TV, so the notebook I use as the jukebox. Better than having to keep switching between the sports and the PS3 when I want to change the music. But for those without a computer connected to their entertainment system, it would be VERY useful if MM worked as a Media Server like Rhapsody and WMP.

iTunes can connect to a media server, I don't think iTunes is as good as MM though of course. At least it offers a 1/2 decent way of going through the library, compared to the media center/extender options out there.

Reviving an old thread....

Has there been any development in this area. I would LOVE to uninstall iTunes from all my machines and my kids machines and use MediaMonkey. But we use a MediaServer on my NAS device.

You can directly connect to the NAS using the UNC path right now. MediaMonkey 4 should have DLNA capabilities, but that is for somewhere in the future.

I myself having been using MediaMonkey all around the house with my NAS for years.

I just got a PS3, and can't be happy with none of the media servers I tested. MediaMonkey's sound and organization is really amazing.
