Problem with Comment Tag

Post by infinityronin »

Before I start this post, I just want to say that I love MediaMonkey, have been using it since the early part of version 2, and currently use the Gold version of 3.0.4.1185. It is THE best music manager I have ever used (and I've used a lot)

I recently had to start using Itunes in order to manage folders for a dj program I use (the dj program reads the Itunes Library). I have some information stored in the comments tag that doesn't show up when I import my music (along with ratings, non related issue with itunes, god I hate itunes). I couldn't figure it out, because every other tagging program I have used showed the comments. But in Itunes only maybe 3 or 4 of about 10,000 songs displayed the comments I had entered. So I had a programming friend look at one of the files that displays the comments tag in Itunes, and one that doesn't. He wrote (paraphrased)

For the file that doesn't display the comments tag, the comments tag reads COMM.......XXX.03A, A#mTCON.......Si
For the file that does display the comments, the comments tag reads: COMM.......eng.11A, F#m......
However these are V2.3 tags, and you cannot use XXX for v2.3 tags, but it is okay for v2.4

I confirmed that something like this was the problem by making an update to one files using Mediamonkey. Loaded it in Itunes, no comment. Took the same file, and using MP3tag v2.40, I saved the file three different times, using three different ID3 versions: v2.3 ISO, v2.3UTF, and v2.4. Each time, the file showed up in Itunes with the comment tag. Edited the tag again in Media Monkey, using ASCII(always) and then ASCII + UTF, both times when I reloaded the file into Itunes, no comment.

I am just wondering:
1) Am I understanding the problem correctly ie does this make sense
2) Is there anything I can do to fix this on my own?
3) Might this be resolved in a future update, cause I am pretty intent on keeping Mediamonkey as my media manager.

Thanks in advance guys!

Sorry to say, but there doesn't look to be much you can do. The issue has been raised prior though, and the developers have logged it in the Bug Tracker (see Bug #2592), but they have assigned it a low priority so it's no telling when, or if, the problem will be addressed.

Thanks for the response!

Man that sucks for me, but I can understand why it would be such a low priority. Guess I better get used to using Itunes. I seriously hate that program.

Any possibility that MM will start supporting writing tags using v2.4 any time soon?

I think that the devs have been sticking with v2.3 because its more compatible with other software and devices in general. It could be added eventually though, see http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=3301
