Playlist randomly looses blocks of tracks! BUG#6283

Post by Christiebunny »

I'm trying to sort and weed my music collection, my playlist has about 5300 tracks in it at the moment.

I use delete from playlist/library for the tracks I want to keep, and shift-delete to erase the tracks I don't. Every once in a while, a chunk of my tracks spontainiously vanishes from the playlist (just now it was 2937). Hitting the 'edit -> undo' option brings them back, they're only gone from the playlist, not the drive. about half the time i don't have the problem again, other times it happens again simply by switching to the next song.

Any idea what's up, why it's happening? I'm using win7 ultimate, and MM 3.2.0.1294

I've noticed a similar problem to this on the same build. (Not to hijack your thread or anything, but it could be what's happening to you as well). Whenever I right click on a track (or a few) and "Send to playlist", they appear in the new playlist fine, but when I remove them while they are still selected (right after sending them to that new playlist) they get removed off of BOTH playlists. Very annoying... especially when you have a large library and rely on playlists (and shuffling from one another) when all of a sudden you notice tracks are missing. Is there a version I can downgrade to that doesn't do this? Thanks.

Can you explain this again? I'm not aware of such a problem. What do you mean "Both" playlists, you said you had only added it to one?

I have not yet really started to use the "playlists", and are looking around for what they can do for me, and which problems they can give me.
But your post confuses me a bit.
Do you mix the functions "playlists" with "Library" or vice versa? It seems like you talk about playlists in one term, like its the whole library.

I should have been clearer, sorry, I meant the 'now playing' list. I've loaded my music collection in there, and am using <del> to remove tracks i want to keep from it as I go along, and <shift-del> to permanantly delete the tracks i don't want to keep. Occasionally as I'm going along, a large chunk of tracks will just vanish from the now playing list.

It SEEMS to happen when switching between tracks, though I'm not 100% sure about that - there's been a couple times I've let it play, and came back 15-20 minutes later, to find 2500 tracks vanished from the list - and in one case, I closed MM down with 5300 tracks in the now playing list, and when i reopened it, there were about 2200 instead. I've gotten in the habit of saving the now playing list to a playlist as i go, just in case, and so far I can get it back through that or edit->undo... but it's incredibly annoying!

Any ideas, or suggestions on how to track down whatever this is?

I'll try to break this down.

1) I have 5 songs on playlist A (named 'Prog mix' for example).
2) I want those same songs on playlist B (named "Favorites").
3) So I select the 5 songs on playlist A, Right click on them, go to "Send to ...", then select playlist B from the dropdown menu.
4) If I go to playlist B to check to see if the songs have added correctly, they are there.
5) If I go back to playlist A, and select one of those 5 songs which I no longer want on THAT playlist (A), I right click, go to "Remove", then select "Remove from the Playlist only", the song removes like it's supposed to BUT it also removes that same song (the one I just removed from playlist A) from playlist B (the one I just added it to). It removes it from BOTH playlists, when I just want it removed from the first one (A).

I hope that explains my situation... Try and follow my steps to recreate it on your MM and it will most likely have the same glitch. I'm a DJ (and sometimes just use my laptop instead of decks), so I rely on playlists more than my library (which consists of a LOT of songs). I can't simply just drag and drop the songs from one playlist to another because most of the time I need the songs on BOTH (sometimes more) playlists. If I drag and drop the songs from the library, they are there to stay, but if I "Send to" from a playlist and later remove it, it removes it from all playlists I've sent it to. And I find it a lot easier dealing with playlists with say 150 songs, than my library which consists of 20,000+.

Thank you for the clear steps, but I've just tried it and it isn't reproducible for me. Here's what I did:

1. Created a new playlist "A", and added to it 5 tracks
2. Created a new playlist "B"
3. From playlist "A", selected all 5 tracks and right click > send to > Playlist > "B"
4. Opened playlist "B", all 5 tracks were present
5. Went back to playlist "A", removed the 3rd track (right click > remove > remove from playlist only)
6. Viewed playlist "B", nothing had changed - all 5 tracks present

Are you running the latest version of MM (3.2)?

I never used to have this problem, but I noticed I had it after importing my old library to my new install. I uninstalled it, and reinstalled the latest version but this time I didn't bring over my old library and readded everything via add folder. Problem solved! I no longer have disappearing tracks. Thanks a lot for trying to replicate it, it was definitely something on my end, possibly some type of corruption with my old library, or perhaps I copied over some of the wrong files.

I Am unable to provoke the same result after adding my whole library to the "Now Playing", which I normally never do.
Be sure to have the Auto-DJ in Tools / Options : Player: "Auto DJ/Now Playing" unchecked.
If that don't work, we will have to have to have some experts helping you her, I think.

Actually, nohitter151. I made a mistake when trying to duplicate the problem. Right after you send the tracks to the new playlist (B), while they are still highlighted (on A), try removing them. Go to the new playlist (B) you sent them to and you'll notice they aren't there, and if you go back to A, they will have "reappeared".

Thank you, I can reproduce that. Added to bug tracker: http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=6283

I have noticed playlists also lose tracks when block deleting. If I delete 1 track it dissappears. If I hold shift and select more than 1 track, the track below often deletes as well by mistake so I have stopped doing this. Not sure if this has any resemblance to the issue.

You'll have to be more clear how to reproduce this. I don't understand as typically when you are holding shift you intend to select multiple tracks anyway.

Say I have a playlist of 10 tracks and hold shift down and select tracks 4,5 and 6 and click delete from the playlist. I often find that track 7 will also have been deleted from the playlist even though it wasn't selected or highlighted. I don't know why this happens but the poster may have noticed tracks missing if this was done a lot although it seems to be more a problem with the lists themselves.

its possible that MM is getting confused between:

-- shift + select files to select a list of sequential files
-- shift + delete to delete file selected file or files
