Fixing volume level

Post by terrypin »

This is a topic I've never grasped. I find the explanation at
http://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/index.p ... e_Leveling
too technical. I'm looking for a plain english summary of the detailed practical steps I need to take in order to get all selected tracks playing back at the same (chosen) volume both on my PC with MM and in my car after syncing please.

A good second best would be to quickly edit the volume of chosen tracks.

Level for Playback is MM only
Level Track alters the files themselves to playback anywhere, including a car (this doesn't mean you can't also playback, it's just for universal
playback. The above is MM playback).
MM wiki wrote:To losslessly level the volume of MP3 Tracks already in the library:

Configure the 'Target volume level for leveling' to the desired volume via Tools > Options > Player > Volume Leveling.
Select all of the Tracks you wish to level and click Tools > Level Track Volume. This will take some time as each Track will be individually analyzed, and the volume will then be adjusted so that the Track(s) can play back levelled on any player.
You need to make sure only the sync'ed copies of the tracks get leveled (unless you want your originals to be leveled permanently). I'm not certain how to make sure of that, as I don't use leveling.

There are a few options, it really depends on your preferences.

You can:

1. Irreversibly modify the volume of your music files (works on PC and car, only for mp3 files)
2. Reversibly modify the volume of your music files (works on PC only, but for all file types)
3. Reversibly modify the volume of your music files, and then irreversibly modify the files only that are copied to your device for the car (works for all file types, but requires that all files for the car are mp3 format)

So I'll assume you want option 3. The steps are as follows:

1. Select all files you want to modify volume (presumably entire library)
2. Tools > Analyze volume (you will see a progress bar at the bottom of the window to track progress on this. It could take a long time depending on how many tracks you're doing)
3. In your portable device options (Options > Portable/Device sync, select your device, press "Configure" button), go to Auto-conversion tab, check the box to level volume

Thanks both, very helpful. Nohitter's option 3 looks like the method I need, and I'll start with a test sample.

To clarify, Analyze Volume works in any application/device that supports it. It's not MediaMonkey only, but many devices do not support this.

I just tested Volume Leveling work on all formats but tracks are rencoded and you should use convert track instead of Volume leveling.
