USB Stick Sync not working as it once did

Post by homerpez1 »

I'm at my wit's end... with this latest version of MM, I can't sync to my USB stick like I used to - at all.

I have it configured as follows:

Summary tab: only "Scan as soon as device is connected" is checked

Auto-Sync list tab: I have selected my playlists under the "Playlists" section checked.

Options Tab: Under Auto sync, "Delete files and playlists not included..." and "Confirm deletion (recommended)" are the only ones checked. Under Tagging, only "remove images more than 100KB" is checked. Under Playlists, nothing is checked (because I'm just copying music files, not the playlist files - I don't use them).

BEFORE, the way this used to work is this: When I "Auto Sync" the USB stick, it takes all the mp3's from my selected playlist and checks to see if they are on the USB drive, if they have the same name, same size, etc. and in the right directory. Any new music files were copied over. If files were found on the USB that didn't match the playlist, it would ask me to delete them with a dialog. Then it would proceed, deleting what didn't match, adding just what songs were new to the playlist.

AFTER, It brings up an error saying "there isn't enough space to syncronize..." and never compares what I'm trying to copy to the contents already on ther USB stick. If I proceed from there, it never asks to delete files that don't match (even though it's checked, and to confirm before delete). It then attempts to copy the ENTIRE playlist to my USB drive again, from scratch!

Without changing any settings on my end, it now seems to be ignoring what's already on the USB stick. It never makes any attempt to compare A to B, and doesn't offer to delete what doesn't match. Just tries to copy ALL of it, fresh, every time.

All I want it to do is compare what's there to the playlist, and make the files in the playlist wind up on the USB stick. Before it worked, and after 4.0.6.1501 it doesn't.

I have tried wiping out the device in "options" and plugging it back in, selecting settings over, but it still behaves this way. Is there a known fix or work-around? I appreciate any help anyone can give. It's the simplest problem, but a serious one for me. Thanks...

Yes, this is with Media Monkey 4.0.6.1502 (I believe, since I'm replying from my phone and not in front of the PC at the moment). Its the current version.

You may want to send a debug log (step 4b) to support: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=69

I suggest you clean the device. Start log 1 and Auto-Sync once. Restart MediaMonkey and log 2 redo Auto-Sync once.

I ended up solving the problem myself, but it was very awkward. I'll post the solution in case anyone else is having the same trouble...

Apparently my plain USB thumb drive was being detected as an "unknown device" by MediaMonkey, rather than the USB drive it actually was. Under Tools > Options > Portable/Audio Devices, it would come up under its name (I named it "PATRIOT" for the brand of drive it was), but it would always use the d_WMDM.dll plugin. I saw there was the "d_USBMass.dll" plugin, but it kept saying it was not plugged in, even though it was. Each time I added or removed the thumb drive, it always became "unknown device" and used "w_WMDM.dll".

The trick was, I had to click "configure" on wherever the d_USBMass.dll plugin was. I needed to go into "Device Configuration" there (which d_WMDM.dll doesn't have), and specify the Device Name as "PATRIOT", and add that to Drive Label as well. I also had to specify the drive letter, and ensure that the other version of the device (using the wrong dll) was unchecked or removed. It would not work properly until ALL of this was done.

Once I set it up, now the USB drive does use d_USBMass.dll, and after a long initial sync process, now it acts like it did before - asking me to delete what doesn't match my playlist, then going ahead and just adding the new songs added since last time.

In short, d_USBMass.dll works for thumb drives, and d_WMDM.dll doesn't. Hopefully this helps out someone else. I know this drove me crazy!

I second homerpez1's report, but on a USB external HDD - a GoFlex Turbo, if it makes any difference. Until I put the drive letter in it kept refusing to sync and insisting there wasn't enough space. I had the drive label in the config and it was correct. And I'm also using the USB Mass Storage dll. With the later versions of MM3, having the drive label in that config was enough to sync ok. With MM 4.06 it has to have the drive letter.
