MM is copying fiels not synching them?!?!?!

This is driving me batty. I've dug around in as much documentation as I've been able to, read the FAQ, searched the forum, blah blah blah. Either I've missed it, or am doing something wrong.

MM 2.5.5.998
30G iPod gen 5

iTunes is *NOT* installed on the machine I'm using.
Restored iPod from a diff. machine, so I'm started on a clean slate.
I did a fresh MM install with my new HDD, and synch up the first time, all looks to be OK.
Then after adding more mp3s's to my local machine, and connect the iPod to MM, it tells me it's "out of space" or "delete tracks to synchronize" etc.

After digging around, I looked at my iPod and it looks like it's copying files from MM, rather than synchronizing them.

What gives?

Do you have "Force I Tunes Style Folders" checked?
Maybe upgrade to 3.0.3.1140.
