Ipod classic 160 - Multiple "Untitled" tracks sync error

Post by lookssss »

Hello, I recently upgraded from a 2012 build and noticed that when an album has multiple tracks simply called "Untitled", MM will only sync the first "Untitled" track from the album and skip the rest when performing a sync onto my ipod (classic 160GB).

A playlist of said album will will appear and play properly in the MM interface on the computer, but once transferred to the ipod only the single (first in this case) track over and over. See images below:

MM playlist and tree for library on computer:

MM playlist and tree for Ipod:

As you can see the track filename, path, time, bitrate etc. are all the same, as only a single track has been synced.

Is this a bug? Never had a problem before in prev versions of MM.
thanks

I guess the forum doesn't automatically shrink large images?

here are links to above images, see right side highlighted:

I just downgraded to v.4.0.7.1511 to test and when syncing to the ipod, the first thing MM did was transfer about 40 "Untitled" tracks from albums where one or more tracks were named "Untitled"! I hadn't realized other albums were also affected until now.

Anyhow it appears the problem was introduced somewhere between 4.0.7.1511 and the current 4.1.0.1692

For now I guess I will continue to use the old version.

I don't have a classic and other Apple products don't allow this, but if you configure the filenames so that they're the same for different files you'll only get 1. If the classic allows file name configuration change it.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what you're suggesting exactly, but I don't want to change any of the filenames of all my "Untitled" files (to Untitled 1, Untitled 2 etc), I'm anal about keeping my library "accurate" so to speak.

I also have literally have hundreds of albums with tracks like this. The ~40 tracks that resynced following a downgrading of MediaMonkey were ones I have added since upgrading MM, IE in the last week or so. If I were to wipe the ipod and so a complete resync, I suspect I would have hundreds of "Untitled" tracks that wouldn't sync.

Moreover, the fact that an older version of mediamokey works fine suggests this is a problem introduced with new code as my device/library are unchanged.

I didn't suggest changing it on your PC. I suggesting checking the Device Profile to see if you can set Destination for files (non-Apple products can, Classic may).

The change made with MediaMonkey 4.1 is if the user sets a mask that results in duplicate filenames on the device they will now only sync 1 copy (I personally find this very desirable) whereas 4.0 would append a number to allow duplicate files. On most devices users can change the mask to accommodate for this. I don't own a Classic so I can't comment on if this is possible (other Apple devices can't).

I have this same problem on my iPod classic and I find it quite annoying and it was a pain to fix. I had to change the song title on dozens of tracks (by adding one or more spaces to end of title) to get them to sync.

I'll have to see if I can set the destination, per your suggestion. So far, for me, MM 4.1 isn't an improvement.

OK so it's a "feature" :P
j/k

Thanks again for the reply but I'm still not understanding what I need to do to correct this problem. I perused the options for my device but didn't see anything regarding 'masks' or anything regarding duplicate files. As you may know, the ipod classic has a weird folder structure: it's basically a series of folders from F00-FXX. Filenames are truncated, all the filenames are given the same name but are placed in different random FXX folders (I assume to deter sharing). If you mean setting 'destination' in the device settings, I'm pretty certain it just ignores that field. You cannot mount a classic and peruse the folders to drag and drop for example.

I have a fairly well organized library with no duplicates, is there a way to turn this feature off?

Clearly if files have different file sizes they shouldn't be considered as "duplicates"? If you look at the first image I linked above, all the tracks have different filenames and different lengths (and thus filesizes), so even if they have the same title tag, to consuder these as duplicate for syncing is hardly optimal.

Thanks for chiming in, at least I know now it's not a problem on my end.

Just to illustrate how it is stored on the iPod Classic, here is how the album referenced in the first post shows up on my device when synced using the older MM 4.0.7.1511

Note how file size/length and bitrate are all different, and thus obviously not duplicate despite the fact that they are all called "Untitled" and by the same artist.

That shows that you can't customize the filenames on the device. I've reported it here: http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=11913

Yes, thank you for submitting that Lowlander.

I will monitor this thread in case any clarification is needed, hopefully my posts above aren't too convoluted :)
