Volume changes, can't start except at first track?!

Post by phs3 »

I see others have reported cases where MM's volume mysteriously winds up lower than 100% of Windows' volume. I'm seeing this too; not sure yet what the connection is, but it seems to happen when I've paused the player. Before I found the Volume setting from the tray icon, I had to restart the player to fix it. (Which reminds me: where IS the volume control in the MM 4.0 window?)

Now all of a sudden I'm seeing something else odd: I fire up MM and search for an artist. Then I double-click on, say, the fifth track in the results -- and it starts playing from the start. I wonder if this is some setting I've triggered by accident??!

Hi phs3,

What version of MM are you using?

The volume changes can happen with the wasapi output plugin in exclusive mode iirc.

As far as playback starting in the wrong location, I haven't seen that. If you're already using build 1433+, can you generate a debug log of this? (note: in the default config of MM, clicking the fifth track in a list of tracks will cause the entire list to be added to the Now Playing list, with playback starting from the 5th one. This behavior can be changed via Tools > Options > Player).

Thanks.

Rusty,

I was on 1426. Installing 1433 as I write this, will see if it's still happening.

I hunted down the wasapi plugin and the "Exclusive mode" box is NOT checked.

Will continue to look for patterns for both. The "click #5 and start at #1" did NOT happen last night when I went to play some tunes while doing dishes, after the machine had been idle for a while; it's back this morning. No configuration changes in between for sure. But both of those were with 1426. Oh, and the volume changing seems to have calmed down -- but again, that was all with 1426. So ... no useful data yet!

OK, I feel dumb. The volume went quiet again, and I didn't know *how* to generate a debug log. http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=69 says to install the debug version on top of the regular version -- is that true for the Beta? Didn't want to install a 3.x version on top of 4.x.

Yes, if you didn't install the debug version to start with: http://mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=341

Ah HAH: if I'm playing music and fire up a Skype call (as I often do since nobody can ever be bothered to show up for a conference call on time except me), it lowers the volume. Then it STAYS lowered. Right-clicking now shows volume at 100%, as does the Windows 7 mixer. I have to close/reopen to get it back up.

Does this help? I have a ~10MB debug log but it would be interesting to know if I'm the only one Skype does this to.

I'm on Skype 4.2.0.187 because the newer versions have such lousy UIs (I'd be on 3.x if it would run on Windows 7), but that's new: I was on the newest one until last week, when I finally couldn't stand it any more, and I'm pretty sure the problem was there on that version (with an older Beta of MM).

Hi, I tried to replicate this issue but can't. I do see, though, that skype does adjust the volume of other apps before and after a call, but the net effect for me is that the volume after the call is the same as it was before the call.
