1398: DB upgrade from mm3 to mm4 --> corruption [#8079]

Post by Onweerwolf »

I've installed mm4 and used a copy of my mm3 database to have mm4 upgrade it. I manually put in it in the new location. After the database is upgraded some files (specific files, not random files) show strange behavior. When I try to drag or send one of these to a playlist I get the following error message:

I've checked and the files still behave fine in my MM3 installation. I've retried upgrading the MM3 database and the result is the same. I did nothing else between upgrading and trying to drag to playlist.

Now, I've had problems in the past with my database but those seem to have been fixed. You can read about this here: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... 07#p276930

I'm not sure if these things are related. I will try to see if I can see a common characteristic for all the problematic files. (none at first sight)

For others to see if they have the same problem you can easily check this by trying to mass sent all of your files to a new playlist and then check if the new playlist has the correct number of files. If the number is not correct an autoplaylist can help to filter out what the problematic files are.

If I sent more than one file to a playlist and the first one is not a problematic file I don;t get the error messages.

That means the database got corrupted: http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... ticleid=78

Best is to run maintain database with full optimization before upgrading.

That doesn't solve it. Database was maintained with full optimization before it was upgraded and also after it was upgraded. No error messages.

Do you have any addons/scripts installed with MM4?

Btw, the problem occurs with exactly 140 out of 39074 files. I've seen no other problems yet with these files. They play fine. I can also rewrite them with my back-up files from another location.

It's a database corruption. I haven't seen any reports of this happening with MM4, but it has happened on MM3.

Yes, but this particular case does not happen in MM3 yet it does happen in MM4 with the exact same database file. So there is some 'issue' in the database that doesn't cause a problem in MM3 but once upgraded to MM4 it causes these 140 files to not be able to send to a playlist. So seeing as the resulting problem occurs after upgrading to MM4 it should theoretically be something that is fixable.

Depending on the cause of the problem it is also possible other uses have this problem as well without knowing it.

Also, the tracks are not entirely random. There are a number of groups of tracks that were added to the DB at the same timestamp. Not all though, some have a unique timestamp. All track were added before 25th of feb '08. Oldest are from 2005, but those timestamps are imported from iTunes using Trixmoto's script. I started using MM in Januari '08.

Track sources differ completely, some where downloaded, some were ripped from CD. All are MP3 and the original encoding software differs as well.

Hi Onweerwolf,

Can you please PM me with a link to your MM3 DB (posted to Mediafire or a similar service) and give me a sampling of the files in the DB, that upon upgrading, experience problems?

Thanks in advance.

Just thought I'd mention this pending a possible dev fix:

Creating a new database and using Restore PlayHistory script looks to have been able to fix 140 the files without losing any vital database information.

Although there were some complications using the script but those may be sorted out eventually.
