Autoplay CD not available [#8142]

Post by jtekusa »

I apologize if this is already known but a cursive search did not reveal this issue being raised. I recently started using MM4 starting with build 1398 and installed 1399 this morning. I am running Windows OS 7 64-bit SP1.

Even though the option is set in MM4 to play music CD's, the Windows autoplay option to set MM4 as the default program for playing music CD's is not there. The only MM4 option given is to rip music. I have also noticed that MM4 does not appear as a program in the "Default Programs" listing which is the other option for setting MM4 defaults.

I saw there was a post regarding not being able to set MM4 as your default player. I do not have this issue. MM4 is seen as the default except when it comes to playing music CD's. Other music files that MM4 recognizes are readily opened with no issues.

I currently have the auto-detect set to take no action and I play the CD manually through MM4 which works okay. For some reason, even though the MM4 option is set to auto-play music CD's, it is not doing it.

Thanks for your time and my apologies again if I am repeating a known issue.

Start by verifying your enabled options under Tools > Options > OS Integration.

Thanks for the reply, Lowlander. I have verified (again) that the OS Integration options in MM4 are checked to enable autoplay actions for audio playback, audio ripping, DVD Video, and CD/DVD Burning. Of these four available options, only Audio Playback is not showing up. Ripping is the only audio option and as I mentioned before for some reason MM4 does not appear as one of the default Windows programs - MM3 did.

On a whim, I deselected the autoplay audio option, clicked okay, and then re-enabled the option. I didn't think that would work - and it did not - but it was worth a try.

I am hoping and assuming this is a unique issues pertaining to me indicating a conflict with something else installed on my system. :-?

Thanks again and it was a good reminder for me to check the options again. Alas,

The other issue I am noticing is MM4 is not associating itself with the extensions listed and selected in the OS Integration menu. I have all extensions (e.g. audio, video, podcasts, playlists) but everything opens in Windows Media Player. Yes, the "re-associate" is checked on, too. The issue I see based on my understanding of Windows 7 is due to not being listed in the default programs list. I did some software testing for the Gecko browser SeaMonkey and they ran into the same issue when Vista came out. The interim solution was to go through each file extension and manually associate them. This is something I do not care to do as it is time consuming and is not full-proof. :(

Until I can determine if this is an "only me" issue or a problem with MM4, I plan on going back to MM3 as it integrates into the OS as is should. :-?

Out of curiosity, would that cause an issue - uninstalling MM3 prior to installing MM4? Are there remnant files that I perhaps missed that are confusing MM4? Just a thought...

To put my support and commitment in perspective, I purchased a lifetime license about three weeks ago so I could have full functionality of MM4 and future versions. I have used several media players and MM is hands down my preferred player. 8)

Did you install as portable or normal?

I always install as normal. I saw that a new beta version is out (4.1400) so I am going to delete everything, purge my registry, etc. and see what happens.

I must ask - is anyone else seeing this behavior or is it only me? :o

Thanks as always, Lowlander. I have that site bookmarked and planned on using it this time to ensure my memory was not leaving any steps out.

Okay, issue is resolved. Alas, I cannot tell if it was due to fully following the uninstall instructions, the new beta version, or both. MM4 now appears in the default program listing and is associated with all of its extensions and protocols. And, the default action of playing a CD in MM when inserted is also appearing as an option.

I personally will chalk it up to missing a file when I deleted previous versions of MM. Especially when using betas, I always delete the previous version before installing the new one to avoid conflicts. I guess I created one and proved the importance of following the instructions and not what is in your head.

Transferring from new post to this one per request. My apologies for my oversight. It has been a tiring day...

I do not get it. I follow the uninstall instructions for the previous beta version which was working fine, install the latest beta version and once again MM is not detected as the default media player even though I told it to do so. It no longer appears in the listing of default programs and the autoplay settings are once again missing the option to play the CD.

I have uninstalling and reinstalling for the past 30 minutes (per the instructions provided by MM) and no change. I find it hard to believe it is my system as I am unsure what would be causing the problem. Installing MM3 runs fine and if I leave it installed so does MM4 minus the newly recognized extensions. Once I uninstall MM3, MM is once again no longer on the default program list.

This was not an issue until this week, went away with the last beta release, and now has returned. Is it possibly due to having a 64 bit OS? Windows installs MM4 in the 32-bit directory. I have looked all over my hard drive for an errant file that could be causing MM confusion but came up empty. If this is unique to me, it appears I will be unable to use MM4 on my current system. I suspect this to be an possible issue as MM remembers certain changes I made (e.g. showing column browser) even though I delete both folders in Local and Roaming.

Why, though, does MM3 work fine and MM4 does not?

I saw a new beta version was available so I am running through the process of uninstalling/reinstalling again.

Instead of deleting the MM directory in my AppsData-Roaming folder, I decided to only delete the database and ini file. What I noticed is there was no mediamonkey.ini file in the directory. I did a search and it was not found. Could this be part of my problem? :-?

I also looked in Local and the VirtualStore. I know ini files are mainly storage facilities for configuration data, but is it used for more?

Could it be this simple of a fix?

I installed the new version (dated 7/9/2011) and MM is integrating properly. The one thing I did differently is I ran the installation program as an admin even though the icon indicates it does not need to be. The previous installation was not run this way and would not integrate. Oh, the ini file is back again, too.

So, unless someone can explain differently, it appears with Windows 7 you need to run as administrator for the autoplay, default program integration to work properly. I can put my straight jacket away now.

Thanks a bunch for the update, Rusty! 8)

UPDATE: I installed the latest Beta (dated 7/13/2011, 4.0.0.1407) and ran into this issue again even though I deleted the previous beta per the instructions, and ran the installation as the administrator. What I discovered is you must delete both mediamonkey folders in Roaming and Local (most likely Roaming only but I deleted both so am unsure). Once I did this, installed as admin and MM4 is seen by Windows as the default player. I noticed a file in the Roaming folder with a strange extension - is this a configuration file that must be removed?
