Steps to replicate:
1. Start MM4
2. Enter an Original Date as "XX/XX/XXXX"
3. Exit Media Monkey
4. Start MediaMonkey, as soon as the album is scanned the Original Date gets replaced to this:

Since 1433 the "original date" field gets truncated/replaced to display just the year during startup scan/monitoring.

I tested this, but couldn't replicate. Is it possible that you're missing a step? i.e.
2.5 Remove the tracks from the library
If the tracks are removed from the library and then rescanned, it's quite possible that some of the date information would be lost because depending on the audio format, tags for this field sometimes only include the 'Year'. If the tracks haven't been removed from the library beforehand, then MediaMonkey doesn't overwrite the information in the library with metadata from the tag, unless there's been an update to the file after it was last modified in the library.

1. Started MM4
2. navigated to Music Alternative/Björk/Debut
3. Selected "properties" on all tracks in the album
4. Changed "Original Date" from 1993 to "5/7/1993"
5. Exit MM4
1. Started MM4
2. Waited a while for MM4 to monitor files
3. navigated to Music Alternative/Björk/Debut, and see that Original Date has been changed back to "1993"
