New error during sync for 1667

Post by dtsig »

I am seeing a new error (can not guarantee did not happen with last release as I haven't sync'd for at least 2 weeks).

No changes to play list (s)
No changes to music (locations etc)

Below is what I am now getting when i simply plug my g3 into the computer and MMW tries to sync. I have never gotten this error before.

I believe this is due to files with the same folder/filename on device being skipped, this is just an addition to inform the user it happened (wifi sync had this in the last released build (less informative though)).

Sorry, not sure I understand. You say "... files with the same folder/filename on device being skipped ... " by 'Device' i am assuming you mean my G3 and by 'files' you mean the tracks. It sounds like you are saying that there are *duplicate* files/folders on my G3? Is that what you mean.

Sorry to be so dense but I have Album/Tracks in MMW. I drag/drop said to a playlist. I then set the playlist to sync with the phone. Why would anything get skipped? Why does the message say a file "a" on server is being skipped because because it points to file a on the device .. which is already pointng to file "a" on server.

I guess i am just being dense but this message just doesn't make any sense to me. Was the file info sync'd back to MMW?

For Joe Walsh - Barnstorm I think i see a problem. There is the CD for this and an Album. The folders are two different ones
\\LS-XL7AE\share\My Music I-O\Joe Walsh - Barnstorm (album) - 1972
and
\\LS-XL7AE\share\My Music I-O\Joe Walsh - Barnstorm - 1972

I see somehow these are both listed as album Barnstorm. I will review the other noted issues. Can't remember removing '(album)' from the Album field but ...

Thanks

Yes, we added it in course of http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view. ... 219#c37812 , some details also here: http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=11378

In previous MM 4.0 build they were skipped silently.

Thanks for that Ludek ... from one of the links you posted you said " ... Hopefully the log after every auto-sync won't be too irritating for users that have deadlinks on sync-list or unsupported files.

We may consider adding '[x] Don't show this again' checkbox to the sync log."

 This might be a good idea

OK, I left this "error" just as debug message: http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view. ... 219#c38025 for 1668+

Meaning that there will be no MMA synch log message for dead links?

Is this a good idea?

* I indexed an album with MMW
* included the albumartist in the synch list
* synch it to MMA via usb autosynch
* delete, or move the file on the PC (remove it from MMW index even)
* re-synch to MMA
* the tracks remain on the device
==> No error message (that is what I seeming with v1667 *not* debug)

So I have asked for MMW to auto-synch my device.
I have delete other files option checked (with "unselected" setting)

Yet the device and the PC are not in synch.

Isn't the likeliest conclusion be be a product bug, rather discovering that I have a dead link?

And isn't something which draws attention to dead links a nett positive?

This is dealing with duplicate files on device, not dead links in the Library.

OK. I misunderstood.

Shouldn't I have not a warning message in the synch log in the above scenario?

You need to select
[x] Delete others file and playlists from the device [All other media files]

If you selected just
[x] Delete others file and playlists from the device [Unselected library files]
then it doesn't hit, because the file is no longer library file (you wrote that you deleted the file from library).

Or if you make a deadlink then you must de-select it from sync-list in order to auto-delete it from the device.
If you try to copy a deadlink to the device then error is reported.

Thanks. I didn't understand that option properly before. It works as expected no that I understand it.

You could look at improving the option's name.

"Delete other files and playlists from the device:
* Unselected Library files
* All other media files"

It isn't immediately clear where the "library" is, ie:
1. Does it refer to the files on my PC or NAS, which have been indexed by MMW?
2> Or is it refering to the library of files on my device, which MMA has indexed?

I use MM to synch music to my device, but I use PocketCasts to harvest and purge podcasts on my device. I wouln't want MM sych to touch podcasts. Also "All other media files" could also refer to .jpgs. I wouldn't want MM sych to delete any of those either.

I was concerned that your option may have had the second meaning, and therefore I was conservation with the setting that I chose.

It may be clearer if your UI described the options along the lines of:

"Delete other files and playlists from the device:
* Indexed by MM Windows, but not selected above
* Any other media files in MM Android device Synch locations (see Options tab)"

Yes, I know that this is very wordy, but potential deletion is a very touchy subject, and MM documentation is very scant to say the least.

I think Library is an essential component and should be mentioned, your wording is much less clear as it doesn't refer to Library. If one doesn't understand the concept of Library one may also not understand the concept of indexed. This makes Library preferred as that is the term commonly used throughout MediaMonkey. One could argue for database instead of library, however database is a more technical term, thus less likely to be understood well.

Good point. I agree this.

Just the term "Library" doesn't make the existing wording clear about what is being referred to though.

Have a look at the options screen in MMA, ie. "Choose library folders" ... Both products have a "library"
