Windows 8.1
MM 4.1.0.1671
I also had this issue while I was running Windows 8.
-Installed MM in portable mode.
-Run MM as Administrator.
-Install service.
-DID NOT receive prompt that the install was successful.
-Service is installed, but cannot start. Error message initially was "Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer."
-Granted my account "Logon as a service".
-Now System Log shows: MediaMonkeyService is not a valid Win32 application.
Any ideas? Thanks! Love MM.

Re: MediaMonkeyService is not a valid Win32 application
Could you please go to
Task Manager -> Services tab -> [Services...] button -> MediaMonkeyService -> right-clcik -> properties
And attach screengrab of [General] and [Log on] pages?
The "MediaMonkeyService is not a valid Win32 application" is strange, it looks like MediaMonkeyService.exe is somehow corrupted, maybe MM re-install could help.
Going to try to test the same on Win 8.1
Also reading this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812486 it seems that the cause maybe be also:
-There is a file or folder on your computer’s hard disk that has the same name as a file or folder in the path to the service's executable file.
- For example, if the path of the executable file for a service is C:\Program Files\MyProgram\MyService.exe, and if a folder that is named C:\Program also exists on your hard disk, Windows locates the C:\Program folder on your hard disk before the C:\Program Files\MyProgram\My Service.exe file, and then tries to run it.

General Tab (before): http://sdrv.ms/1iwtbDW
Log on Tab: http://sdrv.ms/1hYAo1Q
I can't figure out how to embed the image in my response.
Anyway. Thanks for the reply @Ludek. It appears you are correct. The fix for the issue is documented in at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812486
I followed the steps to update the ImagePath reg-property by adding double quotes around the path and now my service starts and Wifi Sync works!
Here is a screenshot of what it looks like when fixed:

Great finding, I think that the double quotes around the service image path should be done automatically by MediaMonkey to prevent from such a problems, tracked as http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=11498
