Modifying Video Tags Cause file to Be Unreadable
I'm a long time user of Mediamonkey for audio files, but have just recently started using it to organize my growing collection of TV Series and Movies. I've run into a very perplexing and possibly very damaging problem with regard to tagging (some) video files. Here's a rundown of what I've done so far. I'm hoping to determine if the problem is something with MM or with the particular files that are experiencing the problem. He's a rundown of what I'm doing:
1. First I added my 'Video' folder to MM and set it to 'scan constantly'
2. Then, began going through each series editing the following fields as required: 'Series', 'Title', 'Episode#' 'Season#', 'Track#'.
3. I will often use the 'Tag from Filename' if the filename has pertinent information (written in a systematic way) that's missing in the tags.
3. Once the tags look good, I use the 'Auto-Organize' feature to rename the filename to a standardized naming convention: <Series> [<season#>x<episode#>] <title>
Once all is said and done, all my files are orgainzed this way: <Series>/Season <Season#>/ <Series> [<season#>x<episode#>] <title>
The above info may or may not be relevant so feel free to just read the below for the actual problem!
On one particular group of files, upon adding them to MM (per step 1) and then editing the tags (per step 2), the file sizes change immediately after any changes made to the tags are accepted. The file size goes from about 300MB (about 45 min of video) to 2MB! The file becomes unreadable.
I can add some screen caps to explain further. What I'm hoping for now though is an explanation of what exactly is going on behind the scenes when MM edits tags (particularly in videos). Is it usually modifying the file in some way or are these tags separate from the video file? I was under the impression that, with audio, the tag was embedded in the file but I'm unsure whether video works the same way.
Anyway, long post sorry for the wordiness but if anyone made it through this and would like to help out I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm sure I've left out tons of important details so ask anything and I'll try to find the info you need to solve this riddle.

Re: Modifying Video Tags Cause file to Be Unreadable
I'm currently using the latest beta from MM, build 1672 (posted on November 22) however I have just installed a previous version I found on my PC (build 1625) and it also caused the same thing to happen. I can try even older version if this might help.
The file type is .mp4, but I can confirm that this is not happening for all .mp4 files. This one particular season of files is the only ones having this problem from what I can tell.

Do you have the MediaMonkey Codec Pack installed and do you have an original of a file affected?

Originally I didn't have it installed but have installed the latest one from here:
http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... =6&t=54427
Following installation I tried everything again and the same thing happens.
As for the file, yes I do have undamaged versions of all the files. I could possibly upload one of them to dropbox and provide you a link if you'd like.

Sharing it may help the developers figure out why this happens. You can also capture it happening in a debug log (step 4b): http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... ?f=6&t=341

Re: Modifying Video Tags Cause file to Be Unreadable
npbaudoin, be sure to let us know how it goes. I am using MMW for all my video/tagging and continue to rip my discs. Although I haven't seen this problem I would hate to have it creep in.

Re: Modifying Video Tags Cause file to Be Unreadable
npbaudoin: it seems to be quite serious issue related to some specific file format, I cannot reproduce it with any of my MP4s. Please upload me one such affected file (before damage) and PM me link, thanks.

By the way, there is a brilliant piece of sw called DVD Catalyst (hope it is okay to mention). For Videos it is brilliant at converting from one format to another OR to convert different options. For example you might have MP4 with acc(?) and you want mp3. It costs about 10 bucks and really helps me when a friend passes me a vid that the *know* i am going to love. I change them to MP4 'generic' (one of the easy settings) and it converts it so I can use it with DLNA. Maybe this will help you(?). Maybe there is just something funny in the 'heading' of the files. I have had no problems tagging any file I have converted with DvdCatalyst. Using mmw for all my tagging of vids

Re: Modifying Video Tags Cause file to Be Unreadable
dtsig: I would rather resolve this issue on MediaMonkey side, to avoid possible damage of user files during tagging.

Here's a dropbox link to one of the files affected:

EDIT: It's still syncing on my end so if it appears empty just give it a little while.
