1294 Search <property>: exact match false positives [#6205]

Post by chrisjj »

1 See Help:

Search Term . . Search Results
Artist:A . . . . . Tracks with Artist = A

2 In search bar enter Artist:Charlo

Expected: only tracks with Artist = Charlo [<<EDIT correction]
Observed: tracks with Artist = Charlo and tracks with Artist = Francisco Canaro canta Charlo

Workaround: use Advanced Search. Note: search bar Artist:"Charlo" and "Artist:Charlo" fail.

If anyone knows a workaround that works for the search bar, please do say.

I can see in the example, because A = A

But Charlo != Canaro

Thank you for the error detection!

Do you find the same failure?

Interestingly enough, I've found that:

Artist:Whale finds 'Noah and the Whale' and more interestingly, 'Freelance Whales'

Artist:"Whale" finds only 'Noah and the Whale'

Thanks for the confirmation.

Sounds like an undocumented feature.

Issue seems that Artist:A . . . . . Tracks with Artist = A is inconsistent with other entries and should probably read finds tracks with A*, a* etc..... That would better explain how it works.

Please feel free to report that separately because it is not the issue I am reporting here. This issue I reported is that is inconsistent with program behaviour.

I disagree, you understanding of the feature is wrong in my opinion, poor wording would be the cause and updating this would solve the issue.

As Nohitter151 showed your search should be:
Artist:"Charlo"

What you suggest would remove the functionality to search for similar results, whereas what you need is already implemented.

Testing shows that what Nohitter151 reported fails for me as well. Artist:"Ziggy" finds both Ziggy and Ziggy Marley.

I do think that for consistency that:
Artist:Charlo should find all artist that include charlo in the field
Artist:"Charlo" should find the artist Charlo

You really do have a problem accepting objective bug reports, don't you? I have expressed no "understanding" of the issue. I have reported a failure of program behaviour to accord with the declaration. Your wish for a change to what you perceive as "poor wording" should be filed (if at all) as a wish.

So how do you propose a user searches for artists matching Charlo if what you suggest is implemented. It would no longer be possible. Instead if Artist:"Value" is added for exact matches, you can get your results without breaking the functionality to get matching results.

If I fail to understand your suggestion please elaborate on it as I understand that your suggestion would limit other users whereas mine accommodates both.

PS. the suggestion to change the wording is suggested to better reflect the current behavior, which in my opinion is correct.
