OK peep,
It ain't a linux version of MM 3.0 nore i couldn't make it work under wine, BUT !!
With Innotek Virtual Box , http://www.virtualbox.org/ a virtualization tool that lets run a host virtual machine under any other OS, and its a freely GNU app, i'm sorting my MP3s again !!!
I'm running it under Ubuntu Feisty Fawn (AMD64bits) with XPSP2 installed as guest and it works perfectly ! even the MM Player !!!
Just install the VirtualBox from the repos, create a virtual machine, install your desired windows ( with an installation cd ) and go on
MM r00lzzz even "under" linux !

For me - as you can see from the screenshot above - MM runs almost perfectly

I tried your steps running the MM3 in a Win2000 bottle and a WinXP bottle, both with the same result. I don't know what else to try since I don't know what the error is!

I know it is stupid answer, but is there case that emulation do not init DirectSound correctly try to delete/rename all output plugins except out_wave.dll?
Or Even delete/move all plugins except in_mp3 and out_wave so that we can seeis the problem in MM core or in Plugins and then insert one by one to determine which one is the problem?
Unfortunately I do not have MAC to test

Hey Troopersbd,
Thanks for the tip on VirtualBox. I recently switched to Ubuntu 7.04 from XP and the only applications I cannot easily replace are MediaMonkey and Quickbooks Pro 2007. I installed VirtualBox last night and have MM running in a Windows XP instance on the Ubuntu desktop. Great!
I do have one question? Where do you keep your music files, what works best? I currently installed MM into the virtual machine and then share my music folder via a network "share" from linux to the virtual machine. Is it better to simply load the music into the virtual machine as well? Thanks for any tips.

Hi toxboy,
I've been using MM on VirtualBox for some weeks know and as i learned, if u have to tag files, specially to add covers to, it's better to have the mp3s on the virtual machine: it runs faster and it's more stable.
Once they're tagged, i put'em back to my linux HD and share'em in the virtual folder.

Hmm, for Linux guys the upcoming Amorok 2.0 version could be interesting.
They would use QT libs so it may could be an allround edition for windows, Linux, OS-X.... (Be careful MM
)
But it also would be very nice to get an MM allround version, but i think its too much work to concept the full MM project new.
Maybe the MM Team surprises us in the 3.0 version with a little linux support. and anytime in the future linux users will maybe get an full MM linux and windows edtion. But amarok is the best alternative for linux cause it runs under GNOME, KDE,... and have many features like MM. i only missing some little features i've at MM which i don't have at Amarok. But i'll hope the features are in the 2.0 version
And one info for all who means that you don't can tag on linux os: Look for software like "EasyTag" or "Ex Falso". It have futures like mp3tag for windows. With File/Directory renaming, tag filling,....
You also can organize your music in win and linux. 2 solutions:
a) You can get ext* filesystem reader/writer for windows (the same ntfs tools for linux)
b) or you make an fat32 partition where you can read/write from both systems.
So you don't have to make virtual folders and also can play it in both systems.
After a long time you'll forget that you are installed windows on your pc ;D
cheers

I wish I could share your enthusiasm. I see all kinds of rave reviews on the Linux group, but I can't get Amarok to do anything interesting. I couldn't figure out how the playlists work. The collection browser is non intuitive. I feel stupid in that program.
Zerogiven,
Yes, in Linux I use Amarok, but I keep going back to MM. I have a dual boot system, but am trying to get away from rebooting and I would prefer to run MM on linux while I work there. In dual boot it is no problem to access the MP3 files from the Win drive. I use a "Shared folder" on VirtualBox, which is basically doing the same thing, but it does so as a network share - sort of.
Just on a side note - for anyone insterested - Quickbooks Pro 2007 works great on VirtualBox on Ubuntu.
So, the two programs that were keeping me tied to a dual boot Quickbooks and MM, are becoming less and less of an issue. I would not be surprised if I get rid of the dual boot after a while.
However, I would pay double or triple my lifetime MM license for a comparable linux addition!!!
Having said that, I do find myself using Amarok more and more, but just as the previous poster stated, I am not nearly as comfortable in that program as I am in MM.

of course thats right, but maybe in the Amorok 2.0 we'll get the missing featurestoxboy wrote: Having said that, I do find myself using Amarok more and more, but just as the previous poster stated, I am not nearly as comfortable in that program as I am in MM.

no my post was more an ask at the mm developers making a "multi-os" programm. (eg. on qt libs or maybe java?!)
so maybe the developers think about other os users too at a 4.0 version of MM

i don't know the full feature list of amarok 2.0, but it would be interesting for windows users too.
hmm and at jfrorie... whats the matter playlist is handling like MM

double click on artist -> you'll have all artists in playlist... the same with one cd or one track. you also can append a artist, cd, track to the playlist with the right mouse

My enthusiasm goes about Amarok 2.0. The hope getting a full linux supported MM edition is not very big

But it could be interesting for MM. cause many users @ linux would like a player like MM. For winamp we already have replacement software in linux world

cheers
I should have been more specific. It's more of a problem with dynamic playlists. This is the most powerful features of MM gold and the one that I use most. The gnome port of Amarok (Exaile?) has this feature working in a manner similar to MM.Zerogiven wrote:

I dunno. Maybe the Ubuntu version under apt is old or my version is hammered.

Amarok is good BUT not as good as mm when it comes to large collections. I tried it out and it became a real pain in the
later with my collection (+- 65000 songs), while mm3 handles my collection as if it where 100 songs!
What i dont understand both use sqlite and they tell me on the linux forums to use mysql it handles larger collections... which is another @#$%^ to get working.

I just wanted to add to this thread, as I've just recently been messing with Ubuntu...
Mediamonkey in Linux would completely blow the lid off. There are ZERO good music managers. Amarok is full-featured, but not very intuitive (I have yet to be able to figure out how to sync my entire library with my ipod, podcasts included, a feature that takes all of one click to do in MM). Rythymbox is useful for syncing individual tracks, which doesn't appeal to me at all. Banshee is unable to sync for me (and sorts every artist beginnning with "The" under "T"), and none of them have the "now playing" list, so if you navigate somewhere else, and the track you're listening to ends, the new one of wherever you're at starts playing. So much for working on your library while listening to an album...
My point is, I miss MM very very badly.
I'm going to give Virtualization a try, but I hear that to use that, you have to shut off Compiz, and I like my visual effects...
Here's hoping I guess... And yes, add me to the list of people that would GLADLY give another lifetime membership fee for a linux version. If you really want a thing, you should be willing to give people money to make it.
