RC3 wont' sync to iPod at all

Post by joejoe »

I have RC3 and an 80Gb iPod with 14840 songs. I have tried everything possible, but RC3 will not sync to it, so I now have to use iTunes until it is fixed. This is what I did;
1. went into itunes
2. reset my ipod back to factory settings
3. synced with itues - everything works ok
4. started MM, synchronised.
5. MM said it needed to delete all the songs. This seems pointless since itunes already put all the song there, but I suppose it's necessary for some technical reason
6. after a very long time, synchronisation finishes.
7. ipod says it has 14840 songs - same as MM reports - so far everything seems ok
8. go to play any song on the ipod - it shows the name of the song, artist, albus and even the album art ok, but the song never starts, it just jumps to the next song. and the next song and the next song. it can not play a single song.

If you look at the Ipod with a file management utility, such as Windows Explorer, you'll probably find that all of the music files have synced into the root directory of the Ipod, whereas the Ipod is expecting to find the songs in sub-directories. This has been reported already. I don't know what the status of a fix is.

I had to use MM2.5 to get my wife's Ipod synced.

Here's the thread I posted in. http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... highlight=

In MM3 1109, the songs sync'd to the root of my Nano 3G, had to delete them via MM3, then I checked the option to force Itunes style directories and it sync'd them to the correct place.

I think it was a mistake to sync first with iTunes. Start with a factory restore then stop using iTunes to sync music, you are just asking for trouble trying to do it from both...

I have an iPod classic, 160gb. I had the same problem after I installed 1109 and began syncing. Nothing would play, even though it seemed to sync fine. Previous versions had synced with no problem, and the music played. As noted in the post above, the tracks were being put in the root directory, in this case of the iPod classic. I deleted the tracks, checked the box to force iTunes structure, and synced and everything was fine.

Right now I can't figure out if this was the fault of 1109, or the iPod firmware update to 1.0.3. I installed 1109 and updated to 1.0.3 at the same time. Maybe earlier versions of the firmware were indifferent to the location of the tracks, so things in the root directory would play. Or, more likely, with 1109 the syncing no longer defaulted to iTunes file structure, and it began putting things in the root directory.

I have an iPod 80GB classic, and I have not had that problem. I have had a few issues, but nothing like you have described. In fact, in the most recent RC of MM3, I have been most successful. Though, I have not yet sync'd a few "problem" playlists to see if my issues were resolved. In some cases, album art on my iPod was mixed up (but not in Media Monkey) and some playlists had songs from other playlists, and missing songs, etc.

Now, things are working better. Here is the process I have been using each time I try a new RC:

1) Restore iPod back to factory using iTunes. NOTE: I saw the upgrade to the iPod firmware 1.0.3 last night and did NOT do it. I was concerned it would really throw a wrench into my testing.
2) Anything I wish to transfer with iTunes (namely: videos, a couple of TV shows, photos and podcasts) is done manually. Nothing is automatically sync'd using iTunes.
3) Delete MM3 database and MM3. Install new MM3 RC and build new database from MM2.5
4) Transfer over playlists from MM3 to iPod. I have not used auto sync - I send each playlist to the iPod. I might try autosync sometime soon.

Once I saw how Cover Flow works, I have gone through on compilation albums and used "Various" in the Album Artist to fix that. My Cover Flow works just fine now - and is fairly quick. So far, I haven't noticed any transposed album art - but tonight I am going to add the "problem" playlists and see if they're OK now.

Also, I looked at my iPod through windows explorer and the music is not at the root of the iPod. It's under E:\iPod_Control\Music and then there are subfolders.

Hope this helps.

As soon as i tried to add another playlist, I started getting SQL errors. Tonight I have to reset the iPod and start all over again. It's difficult when you have a large collection.

I had this same issue. I ended up having to install iTunes. iTunes could not recognize the iPod and offered to reset to defaults (wiping everything). after this completed, i uninstalled iTunes and opened up the MM3 and it recognized and syncs just fine, havn't had any issues since. Not sure if it was the best solution but it worked.

My fix

Post by Espen »

I've had mostly the same problem as you, but with a Creative Zen. My fix was to use the file C:\Program Files\MediaMonkey3\Plugins\d_WMDM.dll from the 1098 build instead of the 1109 build. If the iPod sync works in any other MM3 build, perhaps it might be an idea to test using another build of the d_iPod.dll (in the same directory) ???

On the 'Device configuration' tab of the Device Profile, do make sure you have checked 'Force iTunes style folders'. Earlier versions of MM3 seemed to force iTunes style folders so syncing did not create a problem, but I think with 1109, at least in my case, this was no longer the default, and it began putting everything into the root folder of the iPod, which meant that even though everything was there but nothing played. Once I deleted those tracks, checked 'Force iTunes style folders' and resynced, everything began working fine.

I've seen that checking that box fixed it for some, but it made no difference for me. It all syncs to the root of the Ipod.

I've a problem with RC3: playlists will sync fine, but single albums won't play at all. They are added, I can browse through the covers but when playing the time index stays put at 0:00 and it won't start playing.

I've a current iPod nano ... any ideas? thanks

I'm having these exact problems with my 160gig Classic. I reverted back to RC1 (3.0.0.1098) and syncs work just fine.

I tried auto-sync on my iPod 80GB classic, and it crashed (manually syncing was fine). Interestingly, I noticed that it crashed as it was syncing a song by the "Commodores." I remember someone else saying they had problems with artists that started with "Com." Same here. I ended up with dupes after the crash and repaired the database. No dice. I removed the two Commodores songs from the playlist (fixed that issue).

I then did an auto-sync, and checked to remove all songs not on a playlist, which removed the dupes. At that point, all the playlists seemed to be in great shape; the songs were all correct and in the correct order. However, on the iPod, all album art was mixed up. There was an odd pattern, though. Each playlist had the same wrong album art, showing in the same incorrect order.

I restored the iPod again and am manually transferring my playlists again, so I hope this will work.

Minus the Commodores songs, syncing manually, all went well this morning. My album art is fixed, all playlists are in good order. Cover Flow works great and is fairly fast - fast enough for me, anyway.

I do look forward to auto syncronizing - manually syncronizing is a little burdensome!

The only other error I got last night (which I hadn't gotten before) was when I tried to eject the iPod using MM3, the program gave me an exception error, which I sent.
