can't play m4a files

Post by shmish »

Hi,
I'm unable to play *.m4a files, MM tells me that I need to install Quicktime. I've had quicktime installed for ages and even reinstalled it today. I read the entry in the knowledgebase about this but it doesn't seem to help a lot in my case (I did not update from MM2.x to MM3). Any other suggestions?

thanks

Are m4a files (at least those downloaded through itunes) not media protected in some cases by Apple.
So they can only play on the device they were downloaded to?

This might help too http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=40350

Actually the above link was for MM2, that no longer really applies to MM3. If you have the latest quicktime installed, playing m4a tracks should work without problems.

EDIT: Oh, you said you never upgraded to MM3; well that's why it doesn't work. Didn't you see in the KB where it says:
MediaMonkey 3.x supports AAC files if Quicktime is installed, though AAC encoding must be purchased as a separate option.
and then:

MediaMonkey 2.5 does not include AAC support at all, though playback support can be added through the use of third-party plug-ins.
So indeed see what the poster above linked to, or check the knowledgebase again: http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... ticleid=99

I didn't write that very clear. I do have MM3, it was from a clean install. In other words I didn't use an installer to update. So I think it is supposed to work. I'm assuming that the add-on encoder is used for making aac files, right? That add-on isn't need to listen to them?

cheers

RIght, quicktime should be enough to just play the files.
