I setup the Device Configuration for my Cowon S9 (in MTP mode) and setup the 'Generate device Playlists' option to generate playlists for Artists and Albums and store them in the \Playlists\ 'directory'.
I also have 3 regular playlists created in MM selected in the auto-sync list.
When I sync, the regular playlists show up fine, but not the generated playlists... well I saw a couple of them *once*. For the most part they do not appear to work at all.
Can I turn on some sort of logging that might provide further information? Never mind that one, found the various threads on the subject. I'll see what I can find out tonight.
Perhaps get on the beta program?
Even better, I'm a professional software engineer with a couple of decades experience.. been using Delphi since D1 days.. perhaps I could be of some use.
Of course, this may be bugs with the S9 firmware. I just find it really odd that one time I got it to show 2 artist playlists (nothing else).
forgot the details:

Re: Cowon S9 'generate device playlist'
I ran all the debug stuff, it's going to be pretty cluttered as I didn't want to remove all my existing music. The important point is under the device properties, 'Device Configuration' tab, the Copy Playlists checkbox is checked and in the options for that all 'generate device playlists for:' options are checked. The destination directory is \Playlists\ (correct for my device) and the 'organize playlists' option is un-selected.
I ran this test on a Windows Pro XP SP2 VMWare session (didn't want to monkey with my main programming workstation). Running on a Intel Core 2 quad 9550, 400meg ram.
I uploaded the debugview log and results from WMLog.exe to http://www.diablops.com/dlfiles/mm_cowons9.zip
Hope this is the right place to report, if not I'll be glad to send elsewhere.

Re: Cowon S9 'generate device playlist'
Check out the ABI (Anything but IPOD forums). The Cowon S9 doesn't support playlists other than the one built in playlist. So, no m3u, etc.
Also make sure you have the latest firmware for the S9. Again ABI forums for details.
You would have to essentially copy the actual files you want in the playlist into a directory on the S9.
Or you could do it with tags. Ex. for the Genre put 'Playlist' for all songs you want in that playlist. Then on the device Browse music and go to Genre and select 'Playlist'. It's a bit of a pain though becuase of the tag editing.
Good luck!

Re: Cowon S9 'generate device playlist'
there is a new firmware, Firmware 2.31 Beta (for COWON S9) that says, among other things:
support M3U
-
Functionality that recognizes M3U files that are created in PC.
M3U folder will be created in 'playlist' from the top menu of browser when you copy .m3u files in COWON S9.
COWON S9 recognizes up to 400 M3U files.
COWON S9 recognizes up to 400 lists in M3U.
ONLY support extended M3U.

Re: Cowon S9 'generate device playlist'
I'm very excited about this new feature. My problem is trying to get it to work.
I've tried everything I can think of but is still not working.
