Hey All:
I am reaching out for some more help. I have finished the process of rebuilding my 'puter, the only thing that is missing is my mail rules from Windows Mail. I have access to the image file that Norton Ghost created but the mail rules are saved in the registry at this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Rules. Is there any way to get the rules out of the registry of the backup to put into the registry of my rebuilt Vista??

I don't know if you can just access/restore the registry part.
If so, I suppose this will work:
- Run RegEdit and select in the tree the key name (ie HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Rules).
- Right-click on it -> Export -> [SomeName.reg]
On you Vista machine:
- Just double-click the .reg file in explorer to import the values into registry.

Re: Vista/Windows Mail & Rules from Registry
Extract the following file from the image file:
c:\documents and settings\<username>\NTUSER.DAT (XP) or c:\users\<username>\NTUSER.DAT (Vista/Win7)
That file is the HKEY_CURRENT_USER regsitry stuff for <username>.
in REGEDIT, click on "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" and then choose File -> Load Hive. Navigate to that NTUSER.DAT file you extracted, tell REGEDIT what temporary name you want to give the hive. You'll then have a new node under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE with the name you just gave it. Find the key and export it.
Select the temporary hive you loaded, and then choose File -> Unload Hive. It'll go away. You should then be able to import the .reg file you exported, or at least know what information you have to manually add to the registry.
Enjoy!

It will not let me import the data, it gives me this error, is there a way to manually enter it?

Sure. A .reg file is just a text file - open it up in Notepad and then just create the necessary keys and values. You can copy and paste text from the .reg file, even.nynaevelan wrote:It will not let me import the data, it gives me this error, is there a way to manually enter it?

Re: Vista/Windows Mail & Rules from Registry
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
Now I have to setup my Syncback program to backup that file on a daily basis so that I do not end up losing my rules again.
