My personal view on this sorting mess, is that this has to be thought over again.

Sorting rules that is a combination with some options on the Playback rules tab and some further sorting elements in the main window is both confusing for the user and apparently also hard to introduce properly for the devs. Which options are on top of each other?

My opinion is, that these sorting rules only should be given one place. Either in the main window or in the options tab including child options and ascending/descenting order for each column chosen.

[quote="theriseoffred"]I've just been searching for a solution to this issue as well - I was using 1414, now updated to 1416 and the problem is almost fixed.
The Album Artist column is no longer greyed out in the Art with Details view, but (I think) it can't be used for sorting for some reason or other.
However, I've managed to get round by switching <Album Artist> and <Album> in the Playback Rules and then sorting by Summary (Art View).
It works well with Compilations (like the Kerrang! one in the first screenshot) - the tracks show in Track # order rather than sorted alphabetically by Artist.

Yes theriseoffred - I did the same, but try to refresh with F5 or change to another node and back again, then you have to activate the ascending/descenting arrow for the Summary column again to get the right sorting back.... :-? :o

I completely agree that there should be an options box that works a bit like when using the Sort function in Excel, so we would use something like:
Sort by <Album Artist> (Ascending)
then by <Album> (Ascending)
then by <Track#> (Ascending)
then by <Title> (Ascending) (if for example you have a downloaded album without track numbers)
I think that's what you meant?

Also, mine seems to maintain the order when I switch between nodes or refresh. Are you using 1416?

I don't see the big deal here. Just change to "Details" view, sort as desired, then change back to "Show art with details". The sorting is preserved, and you only have to do it the one time - everything is remembered after that.

PetrCBR wrote:New Summary column makes sense. In MM3 there's always Album Artist + Album so makes sense to call it 'Artist/Album' and sort by these fields, but in MM4 you can define what fields you want to see there. This column cannot be called 'Artist/Album' (and sort by these fields as it was in MM3) when you have defined Artist + Title, or Producer + Year etc. to be shown.
Peter, I'm not speaking about the name of the column but the way it works...
OK, I repose my question:

Are you sure it's a good idea to change the program in a way that screw the library for all the people used to sort for Artist/Album?

Change to details view. Sort on "Album artist". Hold the Ctrl key, sort by "Album". Change back to show art with details view. Voila.

Okay nohitter151 - I can see and hear what you are saying, but why does F5 refresh bring unorder again - se the pics in my posts.

f5 seems to change the sorting if the sort was not done in the current view because MM resorts the library when you refresh. This is why my method works (but not perfectly as it is necessary to swap Album Artist and Album in the summary column, which isn't ideal aesthetically).

It is exactly what I tried to do, but I cannot get the files sorted as before. :(

I used to sort by "album artist" then Ctrl+click on Year; this way I had the files sorted alphabetically by Artist, then by year.
I tryed your suggestion, your suggestion plus ctrl+click on Year, only "album artist" then ctrl+click on year...
For sure I'm missing something, because I do not get the files in the order I want.

Anyway, it happens to change the sort order, sometimes by mistake (clicking on one column title), sometimes to make a particular selection, etc.
It's not a big deal to have to change the view to go back to your defaul sort order.

How is that a good solution to this problem? Ctrl+Clicking to sort by multiple columns is not standard listview behavior (Explore doesn't do it, for example) and having to change views to sort isn't obvious and adds unnecessary extra steps. If that's the officially recommended way to get the previous behavior back, the only people who will know how to do it are those searching in the forums.

MM3 did this right. MM4 shouldn't sacrifice an intuitive and useful feature just so it can shoehorn in video support.

I agree with HaraldBluetooth1963 that the default Art+Details sort should be Album Artist/Album/Disk#/Track#. Just add an extra option next to the Summary view configuration that controls the sort order for that column, and pre-fill it with that, plus whatever video things are there.

PetrCBR - if your changes in ID 0008273 should have solved this sorting problem in version 1423, I'm sorry to say, that nothing have changed at all in "Show Art with Details" view. To be sure, that no old settings were in play, I deleted the mediamonkey.ini file.

F5 or changing genre still get's the wrong sorting back and now the sorting also is wrong in the "Show Art" view.

Is the correction of the "ignored prefix" bug http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... 53#p308453 planned for later release.
