MediaMonkey 4 sync to Android issue

Post by RubenRybnik »

Trying to get rid of iTunes as my last piece of Apple software( already sold the hardware and went Android :) ) Tried out a lot of media player options and MediaMonkey seems by far the best. I setup my device to sync as a Generic USB device, set the device drive and label, Media Monkey picks it up correctly, so I select a playlist with 177 songs in it to autosync over, then start the sync. All is well and good for awhile, but around 120ish songs the transfer hangs / freezes and wont continue. I tried terminating the transfer so I can restart and that didn't work, so quit media monkey and the process stays and can't even kill via task manager. Not sure what's going on here, but this is the only thing keeping me from getting rid of iTunes forever( so please help lol )

Only different thing I did out of the box was followed the instructions on the thread below to get ratings / stats sync back working, not sure if anything there would have made a difference but thought I should state it in case.

I suggest you try with the latest beta of 4.0.5: http://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/index.p ... zation/4.0 and if it still fails send a debug log (step 4b) with the debug version of the latest beta to support: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... ?f=6&t=341

Thanks ... after a lot of trial and error I think it was the iSyncr app or Google Music causing problems, haven't seen this happen since I stopped those from running before a sync. Will update if I still have issues, thanks agian.

4.0.5.1492 is still not quite ready for androids. I'm trying to sync my Samsung Galaxy s2 and I'm still having problems. I have to auto-sync multiple times to get all of my songs onto the Galaxy s2. The sync hangs after copying some of the songs. I then have to shut down and restart MM and the auto-sync, and eventually I can get all of my songs copied over. But it takes A LONG TIME, and I still can't get any of my MM library playlists onto the Galaxy s2.

Another oddity -- MM recognizes my Galaxy s2 but it shows two separate pieces in the media tree -- phone and card. And the labels are switched --it labels the phone as "card" and the card as "phone".

You should create a debug log (step 4b) of this sync failure with the debug version of 1492 and send it to support: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... ?f=6&t=341

I finally got this thing working. The solution is to sync the Galaxy s2 using it's "USB mass storage" connection feature, and NOT allow it to connect to the PC via MTP. Then autosync in MM using the generic USB connection device -- and viola! :D

This suggests to me that MM needs to either fix how it uses MTP or disable its ability to sync via MTP -- as that appears to be the problem. When the Galaxy s2 is initially connected to the PC via USB cable it will by default connect via MTP, and the only way to prevent this is to select the alternative "USB mass storage" connection option on the Galaxy s2 BEFORE connecting it to the PC via USB cable.

There seems to be an issue with Android 4.0 (ICS) and the Samsung Galaxy S3. I'm having trouble syncing playlists to the device. 2 'devices' are shown when the S3 is connected. 'Card' seems to be my internal memory and 'Phone' is the 64GB MicroSD. Also, with the S3 the USB Mass Storage mode does not seem to be available out of the box. A bug report has been submitted on this. You can see the entire S3 thread here:

I have exactly the same problems.

Windows 7 64 Bit
Mediamonkey 4.0.5.1496 (Portable Mode)
Mediamonkey 4.0.7.1506 (Portable Mode) Debug Version
Samsung Galaxy SII with many different Roms and Kernels. Stock Rom, Stock Kernel, ICS, JB, Cyanogenmod, etc... never made a difference.

Everytime I sync a playlist, or autosync and sometimes with just one file I get the error message, that there was a problem copying a file to the device, if MM doesn't crash. I reproduced the bug with the debug version and the mtp loggin tool mentioned about. Sent both to the developers. If you need anything else or have suggestions for a workaround I'm open. (Since Jellybean, it seems I can't change my phone to mass storage, only mtp... :S)

If you encounter tracks that failed to sync to the device you should test sync with WMP (or other software supporting MTP Android sync). I do experience this too in MediaMonkey, but also with WMP (on Android 4.0.3).

Hey, thanks for the fast answer.
I tried syncing with WMP and the bug with the unsyncable files also occured there. Sometimes I can't even files from my PC to my Android via Windwos Explorer. It says, can't copy file. So it probably isn't a MM problem

I don't really get what the solution is in the Link you provided. As far as I understand it, updated DLLs were tried out and will be integrated in future releases?

Thank you for your help

Ps: does this Problem only occure with Samsung devices?

I don't know what the problem is and what devices are affected. What OS are you using? For me it has occurred on XP and Win2003. I've tried testing on Win7, but WMP wouldn't cooperated to import a Playlist to sync.

The link will have a fix in 4.0.7.1507 that fixes incorrect Playlist type being synced resulting in empty tags on the device. I'm not sure if it only affects the Note. I included it as it also describes the problem of sync failing somewhere through. Although WMP also suffers from it, I was hoping it may be something that MediaMonkey can address.

I just tried WMP on Win7 and the first sync of 250 files failed on track 9. On resync WMP complained the device was slow and should be reset. Restarted the device and now synced the Playlist with the 250 files and everything synced. However as with MediaMonkey the tracks have no tags after sync.

PS. 4.0.7.1507 will only fix that the Galaxy Note is recognized as Android device and thus M3U playlists are synced instead of PLA which is what causes the tracks to have unknown tags.

As WMP synced successfully when I synced a Playlist I upped the number of tracks, but unfortunately it failed so that wasn't it. I've contacted Samsung support and hope they can help in this matter (it would seem a device issue as 2 programs on 3 computers fail to sync).

Sprint, my Samsung Galaxy s2 wireless carrier, unilaterally pushed an OS change from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich, and wouldn't you know it ICS doesn't include the "USB Mass Storage" feature. It only allows PC connection via MTP -- so now I'm back to my original problems of not being able to download my MM playlists to my Galaxy s2, and having to re-sync multiple times to get my songs copied over. :x

I'm using a 32G SD card in my Galaxy s2 -- could that be part of the problem?
