Playback progress lost when interrupted by a phone call

Playback progress lost when interrupted by a phone call
I have noticed that when I am playing an audiobook or podcast and the playback is interrupted by a phone call the playback will revert to either the beginning of the track or to the last bookmark if one was already set. It will not resume from the point at which the playback had been interrupted. For example, if I listen to five minutes then answer a call and hang up, MMA will start again from the beginning of the track. This has happened to me three times so far.
I have submitted debug log ES5YQOR5NQ.

Re: Playback progress lost when interrupted by a phone call
Hi Rivorson,
I tested this out using build 175 using a GS3 running Android 4.1.1 and couldn't replicate the problem--in all cases, playback resumed from the point at which it paused at the beginning of the phone call. I tried:
-With MMA 'Show in notifications bar' set to 30 seconds and
- disconnected the phone call prior to 30 seconds
- disconnected the phone call after 30 seconds
-With MMA 'Show MediaMonkey when screen is locked'
- enabled
- disabled
Are you still able to replicate this with build 175? If yes, can you tell me what device / what version of Android, and what settings you're using?
Thanks.

Re: Playback progress lost when interrupted by a phone call
Hi Rusty
I haven't been able to replicate this today using build 175 but it didn't happen every time on the previous build either. I'm starting to think it might be something to do with being connected to the car's bluetooth since I was driving all three times it has happened. Today I was trying to replicate the problem using a bluetooth headset but haven't had the opportunity to test it with the car.
I'm using a Nexus 4 with Android 4.3. MMA's settings are:
Show the default Android lock screen player: enabled
Show in notifications bar: 3 minutes
Thanks for looking into this. I appreciate the effort.
I'll watch out for it happening again and try to identify a pattern.

Re: Playback progress lost when interrupted by a phone call
Tested again today with build 176 (to be posted soon) using bluetooth, but still can't replicate. Let me know if you find anything.
Thanks.

Re: Playback progress lost when interrupted by a phone call
I have managed to discover a situation in which I can reproduce this every time on build 224 while playing either podcasts or audiobooks. If I have multiple tracks in the Now Playing list and change track by pressing on another track in the list then the bookmark position of the track that was playing is not saved. This only occurs if the track is selected from the Now Playing list; if I select another track from the library or skip tracks using the forward or back buttons then the bookmark is saved as expected.
To reproduce:
1. Add two or more tracks to the Now Playing list.
2. Play one track for thirty seconds.
3. Open the Now Playing list and press on another track.
4. Return to the first track. It will play from the beginning instead of the position at which it was stopped.
I have submitted debug log V49TROML4E generated on a Nexus 5. Also reproduced on a Nexus 7.

Hi rivorson,
Thanks! Tracked at http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=11822
btw, does this mean that phone calls, which were originally reported as the trigger of a failure to bookmark is a red herring? Or is there some other similar bug in which phone calls trigger a similar bug?
Thanks.

Re: Playback progress lost when interrupted by a phone call
I suspect that it is the same bug but I can't say with any certainty. The only way I can think to find out is to see if it still happens with phone calls after the trigger that we can reproduce has been fixed.
Re: Playback progress lost when interrupted by a phone call
fyi, the bookmarking issue in the Now Playing list view is fixed in build 225.
Can you confirm whether it also fixes the originally reported issue?
Thanks.

Re: Playback progress lost when interrupted by a phone call
Thank you the Now Playing list fix.
I'm not sure about the original cause because that didn't occur every time but I have found another situation in which playback reverts to the beginning of the track every time on both builds 224 and 225.
If I play media from my phone over bluetooth audio then switch the bluetooth device to play audio from a different device while maintaining the connection with the phone for the headset profile, when I switch the media back to the phone it will restart from the beginning of the track. To clarify, here's a step-by-step instruction using a car as the bluetooth audio device:
1. Connect the phone to the car with both the headset profile and the media profile.
2. Play a podcast for 30 seconds or so.
3. Instruct the car to connect to another device for the media profile while maintaining the headset profile connection to the phone.
MMA on the phone pauses and media from the other device plays through the car. The car is now connected to both the phone and the other device simultaneously.
4. Instruct the car to reconnect the media profile to the phone, disconnecting the other device.
MMA will now start playing from the beginning of the track, even if a bookmark had previously been set.
Part of the problem is that the phone is not completely disconnected from the car so any triggers relying on bluetooth disconnection will not run. I have submitted debug log Q9OTVKGTL0 for this.

Re: Playback progress lost when interrupted by a phone call
I'm not able to replicate. In fact, in the course of testing this, I found that when a headset profile device was connected, MMA would fail to terminate completely ( http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=11861 ).
Which means that it is effectively running the whole time and just being connected / disconnected / reconnected to a particular media device. If you can think of anything else that might be the trigger, let me know.
Thanks.

Re: Playback progress lost when interrupted by a phone call
I've done few more testings myself and here are the results.
My head unit Do not observe same behavior, but if phone call is longer than 15 Min. it doesn't send RESUME playback to connected device if phone call is shorter than 15 min. than playback resumes.

Re: Playback progress lost when interrupted by a phone call
I actually can't replicate this with the phone call myself, but it did only happen occasionally. It hasn't happened after a phone call since before build 224 but I also haven't had many calls while MMA was playing since that build other than calls I have made purely to test this.
I think the problem that I most recently reported here is that the phone is never disconnected. When the car is connected to the tablet for the media profile it is also still connected to the phone with the headset profile but without media. MMA stops playback because the media profile is lost but any code triggered by bluetooth disconnection will not run.
