iPod Touch (1st Gen) no longer Syncs

My iPod Touch (1st Gen) no longer syncs with MM -- the Touch says 'Sync in Progress' and then finishes almost immediately. MM gives no visible indication of activity. I have updated to 4.1.6. I had not synced this device in a long time, but the 4.1.5 official and late beta releases did not work either.
