There are no monitored folders, and no "Auto Organize options configured. All Auto-Organize happens through the dialog box by selecting one of the recent locations.

I'm using "Discogs tagger" to tag files from Discogs, and "RegExp Find and Replace" to manipulate a couple of fields. I thought that one of these might be an issue because I had a brief encounter with the bug, but that does not seem to be the case. The issue seems to be resolved with a restart of Media Monkey, or a full database optimization. I know that a full optimization happened between having this issue come up, and just now, when it did not. I do not remember if I restarted MMW, but I don't think I did.

Had the bug again since optimizing. Still unable to replicate. Punctuation in the Album name is not it, because there have been some since then that also had ";" in the title. No foreign characters. I'm working through Miles Davis right now. Still working with the same album by moving it back to the original location, does not replicate the problem.

Basically, Discogs changed the Album name; Problem. Changed the next one manually, no problem. Changed the next several with Discogs, no problem.

I do have Search for missing Artwork and Lyrics enabled. They are both set to "save missing items automatically." Media Sharing is not enabled.

It turns out I do have one of my External drives enabled under portable device sync, and it is set to "Scan as soon as the device is connected." This was an oversight on my part with the new External hard drive I purchased for my three drive rotation. I am not using this drive. It is now disabled. This was after the previous message actions were taken.

Edit to add that I have now disabled the automatic scan for artwork and lyrics. I forgot I set that, but I don't want to take a chance.

Just did it again with "Live - Evil" I did not modify the Album name at all.
"Live in Berlin" worked just fine, no name change.
"1958 Miles" worked fine, no name change.
Miles is to much work to find right now.
Kid Rock, "Devil Without A Cause" Worked fine with name Discogs name change.
"Live Trucker" worked fine with a name change.

Only difference I can come up with is whether I use the "Enter key" or click on "OK." (Usually Mouse click.) I'll start watching that for the next session.

Unrelated, but I'm watching Explorer now; Why does the optimization process make a copy of the database, and then delete it before the optimized datafile is finished writing? Looks like it deletes when the file is halfway through writing. Seems dangerous to me.

Did the stuff in the last few posts happened with the column browser still disabled. You forgot that from my last post.
At this point you may want to consider the debug version/opening a ticket, but It seems at times to be unreliably reproducible.
If you can come up with some scenarios that result in the problem, it's worth a shot.
It's difficult to really know what all is going on with your library environment and methodology.

I'm not sure exactly what the optimize process does to the physicality of the DB file.

And this is exactly my problem with Media Monkey.

I run into weird issues like this constantly. I get weird glitches, that I can't reproduce, or I keep noticing weird behaviors like a toolbar button that doesn't work as a button. It's the reason I'm using Portable, so that It's easier to restore my database, and settings. It's why the path in my settings in the "Backup 6.0" script is; \Backup <Y>-<M>-<D>-<H>\. I stopped listening to music for a while, because I was so upset about losing my database at one point. I finally just picked it back up a few months ago, and everything was fine for a while, until I started noticing the weird behavior.

The thing is, my Operating system is pretty much bone stock. I customize very little. I have Office, Lightroom, and a small handful of applications other than Media Monkey (Which is portable). There should be no problems with anything. I'll allow that some of my complaints are about interface details, like highlighted default buttons in dialog boxes. But Media Monkey should be mature software by now, and that shouldn't even be a thought.

I apologize, I'm venting. It seems the more I use Media Monkey other than to hit "Play" on a playlist, the more irritated I get.

I was doing all this with column browser on so I could try to replicate.

No need to apologize. Your venting is reasonable and highly understandable.

I can't count the number of times in the early years I abandon MM out of sheer frustration :x , only to come back to it time and time again.
It was over the same kinds of issues. I came back every time because no other program, in its entirety, does quite what the Monkey does.
I finally feel now like I'm at least at a somewhat comfortable level of use. :) But without a doubt, your pain is "reals"! :(

I don't know exactly how the debug version works, I haven't "really" needed to use it since I've gotten better at the Monkey.
However, if you really want to dig in and liberate yourself from the issues you are always having, I'm assuming there is a way.

What about running debug to do the first "move" or two, whatever type of move, and if a problem doesn't occur delete the log and start over with the
next move, delete the log and so on until you get one on the line. It could be a pain but ultimately worth it if in the end it results in resolution. Maybe
you can make a shortcut to the log folder on the desktop for quick open, delete, close folder each time.
Is it even possible to do that with the debug version? :-?

I appreciate the validation most of all. It's nice to know I'm not taking crazy pills. :)

I also appreciate all your help. It turns out that at this point, I'm just going to suffer through this session of tag cleanup and see how green the grass is on the other side. I'm done chasing Will 'o' the Wisps. Especially because this only one of many that I'm chasing. Your patience is astounding, even if it's just skimming my epic prose. I just started a diary of my experience with Media Monkey. My intention is that when I am done with this editing session, I will offer it to whoever the main guy is as a testament to why I'm leaving. Either way, It's good writing practice.

As I started this process, I start to realize that the things that bother me most are not like "Can't mvoe all files from within MMW," it's the stupid little inconsistencies in the package. I'm realizing that perhaps I'm trying to make Media Monkey do what I want and expect, instead of modifying my behavior to what Media Monkey expects. I left iTunes because I wanted software to behave the way I want, instead of "Buying in" to a way of thinking about media management. At first, Media Monkey worked just fine for me, but the more problems I have, the more I realize this may not be the case. My prejudices about this probably go back to the late 90's when Media management was "Windows 9x File Explorer," and folders full of 128k MP3s, so I could fit them onto an extra single hard drive and play them in WinAmp. I also don't like having my data locked into a specific system. (Apple taught me that.)

Like you, I'll probably be back. It's happened before. I had a couple of things keeping me in Media Monkey; Library size, Playlists, Sync, tagging, and proprietary lock-in. Here's the thing; I've seen a couple of other packages that also use a database for management, so library size isn't much of an issue anymore. I lost all my carefully curated Playlists in a recent database loss, and other software offers "Smart Playlists;" we'll see. MMW Sync doesn't do anything special for my Generic player or Windows phone anyway, and I can always copy files to my device in Windows. I've always liked the way MMW deals with tagging from a general interface perspective; this is what will most likely bring me back. Proprietary lock-in does have me by the short hairs. It is inevitable that I will ultimately lose some of my hard fought tagging. I'm aware of it though, and I've come up with strategies that will limit the loss. Including a full backup of my current library and implementation of MMW Portable that will sit on a shelf.

I'm sure I'll be back for MMW 5. I'm a lifetime member, and I'd be a fool to not at least check it out. I have a lot of time invested here. Anyway, you're a Prince/Princess. Keep on Truckin'

It's funny because I am absolutely about fixing typos. If you notice, I even make a solid effort to use proper punctuation. I pride myself on my lack of typos in online forums.

And then this happened.

In a title.

And you called me out.

Well played, sir. Well played. :)

*Edit to add I found the solution to my MMW problems; I just have to optimize the database every 2000 changes when I'm tagging. :)

I happened to have re-read this post, and I realize it could have been easily misunderstood because sarcasm doesn't make it over the interwebs. Reverse sarcasm like this really doesn't.

Just wanted to make a public apology, and let you know that I was honestly amused that you called me out on my typo. I did not mean my post to sound like I was being a jerk about being called out on a typo, or to imply that you were being a jerk by being funny about it.

As of today I can confirm that moving 21k+ of tracks with MMW from one place to another place on NAS worked and failed on single playing track I was listening on other pc thru amp :(

And I have had no problems since.

It seems like all my problems are related to how many changes have happened in my database. I've started running the Backup 6.0 script every couple of hours, and paying attention to the number of track changes it has reported. When it gets over a few hundred, I run a full optimize, and things have been fairly smooth. I did do a bulk manual tag edit of 128 files, and it started strange behavior. Ran a backup/optimize, restarted, and everything is smoother again.

I can run the debug version for one of my sessions, but I don't know how much information a couple of hours of heavy tagging would produce, or how much you can get out of it.

Sorry if that made you think twice, but you're reading way too much into it. It has nothing to do with "calling out".
It was just a chance to be silly/corny (a kind of humor I shamelessly enjoy). When you made the joke in the other topic about
staying at a Holiday Inn Express, I thought you were a joking around kind of guy. But such is the nature with humor, you
never know.

No worries though, just keep on doing what your doing and if i decide to be humorous, I'll try to make clear the intention.
I try to be careful about typos myself, but we are all bound to make them at times. I've certainly made my share! :) 8)
