Gapless Support for Ipod

Post by Mobe1969 »

Now the 5g and 2g nano has gapless music support (extra metadata - in the library there is an optional "<key>Part Of Gapless Album</key><true/>" tag in the <dict> entry. I'm not sure about what actually gets written to the ipod), can we please please please get support for this with MediaMonkey. Otherwise I am going to have to revert to using that abomination itunes (when they fix it).

Gapless is something that a lot of people have been wanting in PMPs for so long, and noone (other than the defunct rio karma) provided. Galpess PMP is my personal grail. I don't have a 5G yet but will by the weekend (no stock at the stores yet).

I'll even offer to help coding/testing in my spare time. I have a good c/c++ background.

I'll second the Gapless request. I like the feature from iTunes 7.0 and miss it now with MM.

I'd like to vote for this too. I don't want to use iTunes if I can help it!

gapless mode on new iPods

Post by rusty »

As far as I understand, all tracks on the iPod are played in gapless mode regardless of whether on not 'gapless mode' is enabled in iTunes.

See: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304362

i.e. if you have an iPod that supports gapless mode, then tracks that can be played back gaplessly, will.

True -- but it supports gapless playback because iTunes writes gapless information into the file's tag, which is then transferred to the iPod with that gapless information intact. It won't work otherwise...

I'd like to see this in MediaMonkey as well. I like the gapless functionality, but like to have a choice in what program I use...

I'd love gapless support as well. Abbey Road just isn't the same without it. :-?

Yeah, it actually needs mediamonkey to set the gapless tag information on the ipod DB I believe.

I did test it with my new 80GB ipod. I synched an album I flagged as gapless in itunes - worked. I reset my ipod and resynched that album via Media monkey and it wasn't gapless. I wasn't expecting it to work but tried nevertheless.

I've unfortunately had to revert back to the loathed and still buggy itunes now - gapless is that big of an issue for me. I just keep checking back here in the forlorn hope that MM will update it's ipod dll.

I would be happy to put my programming skills to use to help... :D

It is great finally having gapless playback at any rate. I can't believe it has taken companies so long to get this rather crucial audio playback issue fixed (after the ill fated rio karma). I'm just really ticked I have to use itunes to get it... I really do hate itunes.

We think about how to support iPod gapless mode in MM and hopefully some implementation will appear in MM 3.0.
