Podcast URLs and HTML / XML code

Where are the settings (registry?) which determine what application is called when you click on a link to add/download a podcast? I have iTunes set to do nothing, but if I click on one of those links, somehow iTunes raises (slowly) from the dead. I don't use iTunes to download content, manage my music or sync to my pod. I realize that I can uninstall iTunes, but what I'm really curious about is where the setting is that controls this behavior. Is it in my browser (Firefox)? Is it in the registry? Somewhere else?

You can normally change the application that the file is opened in by right clicking on the file and selecting properties. In the Properties window there is an option to change the application.

Now also make sure that in the iTunes settings you disassociate iTunes with the file format.

I am not speaking of FILE association, which you set by opening Windows Explorer, then TOOLS, FOLDER OPTIONS, then FILE TYPES tab.

I'm asking about html/xml code. Presumably your browser decides what to do with an html/xml link that you click on; your browser decides what application to pass it to. For example, mailto: is a common link. When you click a mailto: link, your browser pases this to your default mail program. You won't find a file association for mailto: in the aforementioned TOOLS, FOLDER OPTIONS, then FILE TYPES of Windows Explorer. It's set somewhere else. I suppose that the html/xml code for the "click to ad this podcast to iTunes" type link is set in the same place. Wherever that is and however it is set, it surely can be changed so that it is passed to the program of your choice.

In Firefox click Tools then Options. Go to the Content tab at at the bottom in a section called File Types there's a button labelled Manage. Maybe you can find what you're looking for in here?
