self-destructing linksys

Post by manuel prego »

Hey guys newbie here,

I've been using MM for a while now hooked up to a Link Station, two days ago my linkstation drive self-destructed, all my music gone. I want to get a new NAS, but I'm hesitant to go back to a linkstation, I'm thinking about an NAS solution with dual drives (RAID 1?). What I liked about the linkstation was it's trouble free integration with MM, it just not a robust product, mine was only about 14 months old (out of waranty and Buffalo won't touch it). Any suggestions you guys might have? I've heard of Thecus, any good?

Thanks for all help, :D

You could use any single drive NAS solution as long as you have 2. You could use VirtualCD to backup from one to the other drive or use some synchronize/backup software like Microsofts SyncToy.

There are many dual (RAID capable) systems now (from the likes of DLink, Netgear, Buffalo) which are cheaper and there are multi-drive 2-5 drives from several vendors (Buffalo, ReadyNAS, Theccus).

I would advice to read online reviews to see which ones are good for your needs. I like SmallNetBuilder, but the CNet network often has good reviews as well.

I have all my music on one drive called music. Every morning at 2 a.m., Karen's Replicator, a program that automatically copies files and folders. runs. The music is copied onto an external USB backup drive.
this works for me

Now, no more forgotten backups! Distribute files across a network. Automatically restore damaged or altered files on a web server. And more ...

Check it out at www.karenware.com/powertools/

I learned pf Karen's Replicator in MaximumPC a couple of years ago. They also reate MM very highly

Thank you guys, I really appreciate your advice. I like the QNAP TS 201, but it's harder to find than Jimmy Hoffa. The others mentioned I'm looking over now, again, thanks for the help.
