Problems syncing playlists to iOS devices

Post by unsandpiper »

MediaMonkey 4.1.0.1661 beta
Windows 7
iPad 4th gen 128GB iOS7.0
iPhone 4S 64GB iOS6.1.3
iPod 160GB 1.1.2 PC

I use a few playlists to sync songs to my devices. I have one autoplaylist which collects music recently added to the library, and three which collect tracks which have 3, 4 or 5 stars.

These playlists sync to my iPod just fine in all instances time and again. However there are problems with the iPhone and iPad, which I will describe below.

If I start with a completely empty device, all the music and playlists will be copied onto the device as expected. When I make some changes to my library and there are some new tracks to be copied to the devices things do not go so well for the second sync.

When syncing the auto playlists the progress bar shows that the files are being copied across from my computer to the device. Once the sync has finished I try to play one of the newly copied tracks via mediamonkey from it's location on the device. But the track becomes greyed out and skips to the next track. This happens for all tracks which were copied across in this second syncing process. All the tracks from the original sync are still okay though. Then I disconnect my device and browse to the playlists which should have been updated with a few new tracks. But there are no new tracks on the playlist, not even as greyed out items. Also when I navigate through the artist list to find where the new tracks should be, they are not there either, not even as greyed out items.

When I plug the device back into the computer and look at the playlist on the device via mediamonkey the new tracks are listed in the playlist, but trying to play them results in them becoming greyed out.

Then I close mediamonkey and open itunes and look at the device. The new tracks are included in the playlist, but clicking on them results in an error icon appearing next to them and they can't be played.

Then I open mediamonkey again and delete the missing tracks from the device.

If I go into the autoplaylist in the mediamonkey library and select the individual files which should have been copied across in the second sync, and choose "Send to device", they will be copied across and I can play them with no problems. Of course they don't appear in any playlist on the device.

Some additional observations

If I create a playlist which contains the same song ten times, and then I sync that playlist to the device, ten separate individual copies of the track will be created on the device.

Say I "right click -> delete" a synced playlist containing 1000 tracks from my device via mediamonkey, but tell it to leave the files on the device. Then I re-add the playlist to the sync settings for the device. When I sync the device mediamonkey will create duplicate copies of all those 1000 files on the device. So now I have two copies of each of those 1000 tracks.

So it seems mediamonkey is not aware that tracks have already been copied onto the device.

One final bit of weirdness

Sometimes the titles of some tracks stored on a device appear messed up when viewed in mediamonkey. eg. The title of a whole bunch of tracks will be displayed as two characters such as "-
All affected tracks will have the same two characters for their title. I cannot find any pattern as to which tracks this affects. It will include a large number of tracks for multiple artists, but it may affect a single track from an album while the other tracks on the album remain unaffected. It is not related to unusual characters in the title of the track, as a title as simple as "One" can be affected. The titles will be displayed correctly on the device once it has been disconnected from mediamonkey.

Hi,
I've just tested the issues you reported and I couldn't replicate any of these (tested iTouch 5 + iOS7)

Could you please generate debug log, item 4b) here http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... ?f=6&t=341 so that I could see more what happens on your side?
Also indicate whether you are testing iOS6 or iOS7.

Hi, the time mismatch will be fixed in 1662 as noted here: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... 15#p374831

But I cannot replicate the cover lost, all the synced songs has covers assigned, but I noticed that iOS7 behaves strangelly when I turn round the device from the vertical to the horizontal screen, sometimes it shows covers, sometemies it shows just "no content", sometimes one single album, I cannot find a pattern and it looks like an iOS7 issues. Is this what you mean?

EDIT: This seems to be resolved with today's iOS 7.0.2 update (covers grid now shows fine when I turn round the device from the vertical to the horizontal screen).

I have tried mm 4.1.0.1662 and I immediately get a notice that I will be unable to write to iphone 4 with iOs 7.02. MM constantly says "scanning" the iphone. Will this be fixed?

Capture this continuous scanning in a debug log (step 4b) and send it to support: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... ?f=6&t=341

The continuous scanning issue stopped after 10 minutes. After it stopped I was able to sync as usual even though I got the "no write to device" warning at startup. Thanks for keeping this great program current.

Song rating is actually getting synced to the library, it's just not visible in the iPhone library while connected to MM.

Just finding out about Media Monkey and excited about the opportunity to start giving iTunes the royal BOOT!

Anyway, I'm a free user of Media Monkey. Is it correct that I currently have to upgrade to Media Monkey Gold to get the ios7 sync capability? BTW not interested in any complicated workarounds that might/might not work.

You need to get the latest beta of MediaMonkey 4.1 to get iOS7 sync. Gold is only required if you're looking for auto-conversion during sync.
