How do you organize your music?
Moderator: Gurus
Well in Vista you can sort by Artist/Album/Track# anyway. So here it doesn't make too much sense IMHO...

I use the overly simplistic:
\<archive> \ <album artist> \<album>\<track#> - <title>
If they ever stop reading info straight from the tags, I'm kinda screwed!
Is that the reason most people seem to go for building the "year" onto the "album name" and the "album artist" onto the "track title" name? To future proof the file names?

I don't think "they" abandon ID3 tags. Maybe there will be a new format of this container, but it's unnecessary to worry about loosing the infos -- there will be compatibility. I also include the year into the path of the filename, but not for future proof, just for directory browsing.Full_Circle wrote:I use the overly simplistic:

i know i already answered this somewhere...
okay, here's mine, redundancy in case i mess up my tags...i can autotag may way back...and the ordering of the tracks by filename works well with other players.
Normal Album
ex.
Z:\Music\Albums\Guns N' Roses\Appetite for Destruction\Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction - 09 - Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child o' Mine.mp3
Z:\Music\Albums\O.S.T\The Last Kiss\O.S.T. - The Last Kiss - 01 - Snow Patrol - Chocolate.mp3
Multi Disc Album
ex.
Z:\Music\Albums\2Pac\Best Of 2Pac [Part 1- Thug]\2Pac - Best Of 2Pac [Part 1- Thug] - 03 - 2Pac,Dr. Dre,Roger Troutman - California Love [Original Mix].mp3
Z:\Music\Albums\2Pac\Best of 2Pac [Part 2- Life]\2Pac - Best of 2Pac [Part 2- Life] - 08 - 2Pac,Trick Daddy - Still Ballin' [Nitty Remix].mp3

Does anyone know if it's possible to use the concepts of "contains" and "or" in the $if of an auto-organize mask?
Example for "or":
I want to do something like
Example for "contains" (where Custom1 is used to hold space delimited tags in any order):
Are either of these possible? If so, what's the proper syntax?
Example for "or":
I want to do something like
Code: Select all
$If(<Album Artist>=Various OR <Album Artist>=Variety, then do this, else do this)Code: Select all
$If(<Custom 1> contains 'MyTag', then do this, else do this)I don't think it is currently possible, tho a good idea.
As a work around, you could use an auto-playlist with the 'contains' qualifier and then run whatever the mask you want to use on those particular files.

The Beatles - Complete Discography (26 Albums) (ISO IMAGE)
The Beatles - Unknown Album
Then I have my music that I do not have in complete albums or sets which I call singles
Music/Singles/Sorted/<letter>/<artist>/<album>/<artist> - <title>
eg.
Music/Singles/Sorted/B/Beatles, The/The White Album/The Beatles - Back in the U.S.S.R..mp3
Then for compliations and soundtracks I have listed like this
Music/Albums/Various Artist - <Album Name>/<track> - <artist> - <title>.format
Music/Albums/Soundtrack - <Movie>/<track> - <artist> - <title>.format
I have duplicates due to this but I prefer to have albums complete since I usually listen to albums as a whole.
Here's my current mask. I'm still tweaking it so it not final.
This separates FLACs from MP3s and OGGs. I still keep the extension mask in the album folder name for backwards compatibility with my old way of filing (no parent extension folder inside \Collection\) This also checks for soundtracks, compilations, and other various artists albums and files them alphabetically with the regular albums. Obviously, I tag the Album Artist field as "Various" in these albums.
I was using the Auto-Organize feature in the settings, but it was using up too much system resources (P4 2.4, 2 Gigs RAM, WinXP)
Code: Select all
M:\Music\Collection\<Extension>\$If(<Album Artist>=Various,<Album@1>,<Album Artist@1>)\$If(<Album Artist>=Various,<Album> - <Year> [<Extension>],<Album Artist> - <Year> - <Album> [<Extension>])\<Disc#>-<Track#> - <Artist> - <Title>I was using the Auto-Organize feature in the settings, but it was using up too much system resources (P4 2.4, 2 Gigs RAM, WinXP)

auto-organizing / renaming / sorting etc
I sort my music by album artist (ln,fn) \ album \ artist (disk:track) title
I use this format to auto-organize my music:
E:\music\<Album Artist>\<Album>\<Artist> - $if(<Disc#>,$if(<Track#>,$(D<Disc#:1>:<Track#>$),$(d<Disc#>$)),$if(<Track#>,$(<Track#>$))) <Title>
if there is a disk# then if there is a track#, the disk number and tracknumber are inserted in the filename else the disk# only is inserted in the file name
else if there is a track#, the track# is inserted in the filename
else nothing is done.

This would be possible if you could skip the first few letters of a field but I don't think you can do that. My current plan is to put all the artists that begin with 'the' into a custom field, then make the 'the' trailing e.g Beatles, The. Then I can usedrjboulder wrote: Can someone (Techno), show me how to have the Beatles show up amongst the other B artists. I do not use A-Z folders, however would still like things alphabetized ignoring the "The".
Thanks!

Thanks!to sort all my artists alphabetically. It seems a bit of a long way round but it'll be useful for when I'm looking for artists in apps that use a directory structure (like AudiosurfCode: Select all
$if(<artist:3>=The,<custom 1>,<artist>)).

Then technically your album artists are mislabeledAnonymous wrote:I make it easy. Technically, so is anyone's who rearranges them so they conform to some preferred sort order.
