Replaygain is not converted to Soundcheck for Flac files

Post by Dieter »

When I synchronize my flac files to my ipod (by using MMs autoconversion to mp3 files) the replaygain values are not converted to corresponding soundcheck values. On the ipod each track plays at the same level with soundcheck on or off. For tracks which I have synchronized with iTunes soundcheck works on the ipod. When I select a song in MM using the ipod node for the tracks synchronized with itunes the "replaygain" value is shown in the MM properties, but for the tracks synchronized with MM no value is shown.

I tested this with the last version (2.5.5.991)

Shouldn't that work? The only reason why I cannot switch completely from iTunes to MM is that the replay gain values are not saved to the created mp3 files. So at the moment I have all my music files twice, once as flac files organizeb with MM and once as mp3 files for iTunes.

Is there any setting I have missed?

This was originally made this way on purpose - upon conversion audio properties change (more or less) and so the values can be a little off. However, it seems that this causes quite some troubles, like in your case, and so we plan to change it in the next release.

Thanks a lot.

Do you mean the 2.5.5 release or only 2.5.6?

Soundcheck and gapless playback

Post by Dieter »

Soundcheck conversion works great now in RC6. Thanks for that.

One further question regarding gapless playback. I recognized now that tracks which play gapless when converted manually from FLAC to mp3 using lame and then put to the iPod using iTunes (which does a further investigation for gapless playback) do not play gapless when converting them using autoconversion from FLAC to iPod directly within MM.

Should gapless playback work for autoconverted files or is that not yet implemented (is it a bug or a missing feature)?

Gapless playback is a little more delicate issue, particularly for mp3 files. However, it will be fully solved in MM 3.0, including support for gapless playback on iPod.

Seems that MM 3.0 will be very exciting :-)

One (hopefully) last question.

I intend to replace the original apple firmware of my iPod with Rockbox.

As far as I know Rockbox supports gapless playback for lame encoded mp3 files as well as replay gain (album and track). According to my understanding when autoconverting these files to the iPod (running rockbox) MM does neither to calculate replay gain values (since they are already stored in my flac files, at the moment calculated by foobar2000 to have album and track gain values) nor any values regarding gapless playback (since the have already been calculated and stored by lame).

Is that correct?
(unfortunately I cannot test that since Rockbox is not yet running on the 80GB iPod)

And what device type do I have to select in MM for my iPod when it runs Rockbox?

Full Rockbox support hasn't been implement yet, you can probably use Generic USB plug-in, but I haven't tested this. However, the mp3 files generated by MM have necessary information for gapless playback included, so they should play gaplessly on Rockbox (providing it supports this feature). It's only iPod running Apple firmare that needs some special calculations - which will appear in MM 3.0.

I will try Rockbox when it will be available for the 80GB iPod and report then. Meanwhile I use the (very reduced) Apple firmware and wait for the upcoming MM 3.0.

As a registered MM gold user, do I have to buy an upgrade or is it included in the previous license?

Thanks for your continuing effort and your great product!

I guess that you have Lifetime License and if that is the case no worry.
