Version 3.0.0.1057 Uses MDB on Vista - What Gives?

Post by sdaughtry »

I completely uninstalled MM, downloaded newest version 3 beta (1057), and rebuilt the database. I had thought version 3 used the .DB file format now and kicked MDB to the curb... I'm staring at a brand new MDB file (233MB) that was rebuilt from scratch... and can't find any .DB file anywhere!

What gives?

Are you checking 'documents and settings\username\*.db' ?

Or do you have a database path/filename specificed in the mediamonkey.ini ?

Inside of my \My Documents\Music\Mediamonkey folder is a 233MB sized Mediamonkey.Mdb file that is current - that folder contained NOTHING before, as I completely uninstalled Mediamonkey before installing the new beta. The .INI file inside that same folder is a minimal INI file (appears to have flags to ignore/allow drive letters and determine the language settings).

Inside of \users\scott\local settings\mediamonkey is where the more complete version of Mediamonkey.ini is located.. I had cleared out that folder before installing the latest beta. That file is 15,491 bytes in size and had this entry:

DBName=d:\my documents\music\mediamonkey\mediamonkey.mdb

Not liking that the Mediamonkey installer/application is placing stuff EVERYWHERE (well, three different folders that I've found thus far) across my hard drive... three different folders containing parts/pieces of Mediamonkey is a bit much.

So, is my 2332MB sized MDB file really a MDB File or is it really the new file format (and missing the normal .DB file extension)? As a test I tried renaming the .MDB file to .DB and changed the entry in the .INI file to the same... Mediamonkey worked normally.

When reading the following, keep in mind that my operating system is XP Pro and that I have no idea as to Vista differences.

The MM3 database is the one located in a subfolder under the \user\local settings\application data\mediamonkey folder, and it s/b named mm.db.

I really believe that the other database is a MM 2.5 (latest final release version) database, named mediamonkey.mdb. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it is left behind by the uninstall, which does avoid having to rescan your files after a reinstall of 2.5.

In short, I believe everything for the MM3A install should be under the MediaMonkey program folder (or whatever you called it upon your install) except the mm.db file, which is the MM3A database; the mediamonkey.m3u file, which I believe is the saved now playing list from your last use of MM3; and the ini files; all which you have also located.

So, I sincerely think you are seeing files from the two different versions, and that each install only puts files in 2 locations.

If I were you, and I'm not, I would uninstall MM3A7, delete the program directory in which I installed it, and delete the MediaMonkey folder under local settings\application data (i.e., delete the mm.db file & corresponding ini and m3u files), and then reinstall MM3A7 and have it rescan my data.

Remember too that this program is in alpha, and nothing is yet set in stone, even as to database location. For me at least, that means I don't expect as much and am willing to help with hopefully thoughtful comments and suggestions, keeping harsh complaints to a minimum, especially when I'm not sure they're well thought-out. :)

Good luck, Danny

File format Change

Post by raptorantill »

Microsoft changed some file formats around along with were stuff is in Vista. The new file format .mdb and docx are just some changes. Also when you are looking for your file info try to use the interactive searches. I found two possible locations for you.
Programs\Mediamonkey
Username\Music\MediaMonkey

You've answered your own question.... the database at that location is a mm3 database named mediamonkey.mdb.

Not liking that the Mediamonkey installer/application is placing stuff EVERYWHERE (well, three different folders that I've found thus far) across my hard drive... three different folders containing parts/pieces of Mediamonkey is a bit much.
I don't like it much other, see also the thread I posted recently regarding application data vs local settings.

so there again you have answered your own question..

If you don't want it in that folder/name, then rename and move it.

To prevent confusion in the future, you should name it 'scott_MM3.db' in whatever folder you prefer, with the mediamonkey.ini obviously needs to be specified where/what its named also.

The .mdb file probably is not the new format

Post by PiezoSapphire »

I just installed the beta on my Vista and it created an .db file that is not compatible with Access 2007. When I opened the file in a text editor, the first few characters read, "SQLite format 3". Access .mdb should have something like "Standard Jet DB" as the first few characters. The file extension probably doesn't change how MM handles the file as the file tells MM how it should be handled. (I'm running Vista Ultimate).

If you want to view the data, download SQLite Database Browser from Sourceforge. http://sourceforge.net/projects/sqlitebrowser/.

I opened up the "mdb" file with a programmer's text editor and the first 50 bytes or so of the file were:

SQLite format 3@ QKQ

So, it is definitely a SQLite database... it IS weird that I had manually deleted my MM folders after uninstalling MM2 (and earlier MM3 betas) from my hard drive, leaving nothing behind, installed the latest beta, and it still inserted into the MediaMonkey.INI file that the database should have a MDB file extension.

Thanks to all that contributed to my post... :D
