The dangers of using Last.fm!

Post by Sebastian78 »

After some "fiddling" around with installing last.fm on my computer and downgrading the plugin, I finally got it to work. It's pretty amazing piece of SW and it's fun using it.

But, in my paranoid world I started thinking. Is there any dangers to using it? Do you really want people to know you listen to Britney Spears 70% of the time? One forum user has listened to Roxette 3,079 times overall! The next on the list only got 313 plays. Do we WANT to know this?

Could it actually be exploited by the music mafia, threatening to tell all your friends you listen to Dolly Parton all the time, if you don't hand over a huge sum of money?

:P

Music taste is pretty personal and I guess you do judge people by it. It's pretty harmless and I'm not being THAT serious here. But think about it for a while....

There was I time that I cared about such things, but not anymore. Just be yourself, and do what you like (within some boundaries of course :-?).

I'm more concerned about the RIAA. By taking a look at the different tracks you play, they can see where the most likeliest music pirates are. Anyway, the big software vendors (who can know for sure if you bought software with them or not) do it this way.

But you might be right about Britney's Tears.
Extensions: ExternalTools, ExtractFields, SongPreviewer, LinkedTracks, CleanImport, and some other scripts (Need Help with Addons > List of All Scripts).

I just hate that one night I was playing some Wiggles songs for my kids and instead of turning it off, I muted the system. It played the Wiggles over and over until the next day.

For a good while the Wiggles were my most listened-to artist.

Now that's what I'm talkin' about. I see the Wiggles in a whole new light now. Thanks. :D

Well, it's probably too late now, but you can delete songs off of your Last.fm recently listened to tracks if it is within 2 weeks of the song being played. You just go to your recently listened to tracks and hit the trash can icon next to each track you want to delete. It takes a while for the changes to reflected in your stats, but it does get reflected.

Of course, having the Wiggles in your most played list must have given you a different take on the world ;)
