My library cleared.... help...

Post by GregK73 »

I have loved music monkey. I ripped in all of my CDs and have close to 12k songs. I spent a lot of time changing the tag properties so that things would group like I wanted them. I pretty much had it perfect and was doing only minor things. For example, on Tuesday I got the Bob dylan bootleg series V8. When I ripped it in, I realized the album titles for Bootlegs 1-7 were in different ways so I conformed them all to "Bootleg Series Vol. X: name" etc. Those were the type of organizing things I was doing.

Last night I'm not sure what happened but my library cleared. There was nothing. I closed/reopened, rebooted, etc. IT would not come back. So, with trepidation, I reimported. The content seems to be there BUT the tags are in disarray. For example, the Dylan Bootlegs are back to the pre-conforming titles.

I am accepting that I'm going to need to re-do all of my customization. My questions are:
1) Am I doing this all wrong? Note that I'm very particular about the order and labeling of the music (like many people, I'm sure). Is there a best practice in terms of how to rip a CD and so on?
2) Maybe more importantly... is there a way to save the tag properties so that I can backup and if something with the library goes wrong in the future, I can reimport and my tagging efforts will be saved?

I'm rather despondent over this b/c I had many hours into previous efforts. Any help would be truly appreciated...

First of all I advise you to check out the Backup Script as it can make a backup of the library (database) for you in case it get's lost/cleared.

Secondly it depends on the file type, but most tags can be saved to the files themselves so that when you rescan the tags are still present. You will need to enable MediaMonkey writing the tags under Tools > Options > Tags & Playlists selecting "Update tags when editing properties". Besides enabling this option you can occasionaly verify that the tracks have been saved by going to the Files to Edit > Unsynchronized Tags node. Select all files shown in this node and use Tools > Advanced Tag Management > Synchronize Tags to save the database values to the files themselves.

Did you create a backup database before the meltdown? That has all of the info you are trying to retrieve I believe.

Thanks. I have checked and, sadly, that file was not in the backup I do.
I guess I'll rebuild and make sure I fix the back up. Thanks for help.

Check if you have a database and .ini file...
